just a little write up about what i have done to the car

been looking for 9 months for the right car

then i seen this on auto trader website

Image

3 owners, first one was bmw as it was they demo car

66k fsh, m3 kit, tints and m3 reps

fitted a few mods over the 2 year i have had the car

first was m gear knob, bmw motorsport kick plates, door moulding badges and glove box badge
Image
Image
Image
Image

had a problem

car was leaking water all over the place

turned out it was the timing profile gasket

common problem on car built before september 93

mine was built in feb 93

so out came half the engine to change a part which cost £1.60
Image
Image
Image

the problem
Image
Image
setting the cam timing
Image
Image

when it was out, i thought i would clean up some of the metel parts
Image

after a day cleaning all the bits, it now looks like this
Image

how it looks before
Image

next the noise i had when i got it got worse

so i had to fit a new manifold

Image

also the rear box was getting noisy, so changed that for a new one
Image

rear wheel bearing was getting worse so a new one was fitted

Image

also rear trailing arm bush was knocking, so changed this too

Image

seen everyone was fitting this so got a set from teddy

ccfl gen 2 angel eyes

Image
Image

also fitted some hids

really good, cant believe how bad the old lights was

Image

did not like the wheels which came with it
so got a set of 15" to run on while i was trying to sell the reps
Image
Image

could not sell the reps, so used themfor the track

then got a set of mint 328i sport bbs alloys

had these on for a while

Image
Image
Image

then got these

Image
Image
Image
Image

sold the reps and now going to use the bbs wheels for the track

got some leather bits made up

centre console in black nappa leather

Image
Image

also some gaitors with the stiching done in the m colours
Image
Image

also got hold of a leather handbrake lever
got it from a 7 series in a scrap yard
Image
got a black leather interior for £340
Image
and a arm rest
Image

found on the etk a cup holder so got one of thses too
Image

decided to overhaul my suspension

Image

eibach springs
eibach roll bars
koni adjustable shocks
x brace
e46 m3 rear top mounts
front top mounts
ball joints with arms
wishbone arm bush
reinforcement plates front and rear
springs pads
bump stops

x brace fitted
Image
Image

m3 gt corner splitters

Image
Image

took the car out on the track

castle combe

Image
Image
Image
Image
track wheels
Image
out on the aston martin test track
Image

at rockingham
waiting to go out on track
Image
Image

changed the twin slates in the front bumper to the mesh, which is found on the m3s

before
Image

after
Image

seen everyone was getting the german plates surrounds

when i was on holiday in italy, i seen that the bmws had these

Image

so after talking to the parts chap got one for free

got a m tech 2 steering wheel from fab direct
Image

also fitted this
Image

very handy

got in one day and had no clucth

checked the fluid and it was low

turned out to be the slave cylinder

Image

changed the rear lights to m3 clear/red

much better looking

Image

like the car looking clean

heard great things about zymol, so use they vintage glaze

That's a damn good write-up and a nice car, just a shame about the Motorsport stuff.

Do you think the Zymol stuff is worth it then? Looks good in the photos but obviously pics can only tell so much.

i like the motorsport stuff, not everyone has got it, so its a little different

cant tell you the amount of people who come up to me and say how great the car looks, some are so shocked by it and the age of it

i had one bloke who had a brand new sabb and he said mine was better

for me i think zymol is worth it

Fair enough, it's a bit chav on a 318 and the only thing that lets the car down (albeit only slightly) but that's just my opinion, at least you've kept the boot badge.

Does look damn good though in terms of paintwork for a 13-year-old car, keep it up :thumb:

bmw did use the 318is for touring cars in the eariler 90s, so it can wear the motorsport badge more than say a 323i

on a similar note to this, you considered making an S42 rep out of it? that would be pretty special and go well with its unique spec. rather than the s50? the s50b30 would be faster though i guess, insurance would be a bit pricey though.
is the 22nd an action day yeah? prob not able to make that one, i'm pretty busy that wkend, is a shame as wouldn't mind getting some track time in soonish.
see ya on the 9th then, keep us posted mate.

What did you use to clean the rocker cover and inlet manifold?

yup, thats what i'm doing to mine. its expensive, probably won't cost you that much less than an s50, but you'll get a newly rebuilt engine and standalone management out of it etc, plus the knowledge that you have an ultra rare engine. I'd have thought 200bhp+ is attainable. not s50 performance, but should make a cracking 4 pot - remember your car's what 200kgs+ lighter than an m3?

as for track days nothing planned yet. would have liked ot do the action day, but they're normally quite crowded etc so im not that upset. am v tempted to do scumball in july, need to convince someone to share a car etc and work out if i can afford it!

Really good thread - thanks for taking the time and effort. Especially love the kickplates.

The centre console panel in leather is a fantastic touch too - you got it made up yourself not a BMW part I take it?

brilliant car mate i like the motorsport stuff and your car qualifys wearing it as it was a homoglation car for BMW to go racing with that engine in the first place. exellent quality!!! i think the bbs rims finished the car off nicely.
