Help Engine swop & Power steering

Hi

I have a 1987 325I sport with the engine blown.

I have been offered a engine from a 1989 sport can I fit this.
Will it be the same wiring connections and engine mounting?

Is it a simple swop or is there alot more to do?

Also my car does not have power steering, but the engine I'm getting has a power steering pump, can I change the power steering rack for my old non power item.

Is this a simple swop?

All help would be welcomed.

Hi Imran I'm certain it is a straight swop with the only difference between early and late 2.5's being the compression ratio, all mountings, wiring etc should be the same.

And yes you can retrofit PAS, you would need the rack, reserviour, pump and pipes etc

Should all be quite straight foward

M20 Engines:

Early engines (> 88 ) use Motronic 1.0)
Late engines (88 > 92 ) use Motronic 1.1)

The Motronic 1.0 system used a 2 row ecu setup and the Engine speed and position sensors were mounted in the gearbox bellhousing

The Motronic 1.1 system used a 3 row ecu setup and a combiened engine speed/ position sensor

You can use the early setup on the later engine, but personally I would keep the later setup using the Motronic 1.3 electronics and 3 row ECU etc.

CharlE30 is spot on with the P/s but you will also need the joint which goes between the bottom of the column and the rack itself as P/s and non P/s ones of these are different lengths.
