right i have a problem

due to my car being a stupid fuck (excuse language im very angry)
i missed the track day on sunday.

i have called rac and have pointed me in the direction of head gone.

the reason for this is when you have the lid off the coolant tank
and you push the throttle cable bubbles blow through the pipe
and into the tank. every time you push it this happens and there is also slight gas looking stuff arounnd the lid like its burning or something.

sorry for the crap description but i cant think how else to describe it.

before it conked out it was rattling like a aerosol spray can which sounded like it was coming from the manifold and i also lost all power when i put my foot on the accelerator.
i was trying to slowly accererate but it seemed like the power just wasnt going through.

then it started cutting out when slowing down and the oil light was flickering on and off but checked the oil and its fine. it started doing this on my 316i with the rattling noise and cutting out and it turned out the engine had seized could it be like that this time

thanks for any advice its greatly appreciated

Bummer about the car dude, you missed a good day,

A telling sign of the head going (if I have it right) is water mixing with your oil in the engine, this shows up as white gunk under the oil cap or on the dip stick. Usually empties the rad of water as well leading to over heating..... which is nothing like your problem but then I may have it wrong and this (white gunk) is specific to head gasket failure rather than another part of your head unit going

Sorry to hear that mate.

Was it the oil level or oil pressure light that was flickering on and off?

If it was the pressure light and the engine was rattling like the 316, then its possible to be an oil feed/pump problem and the engine is on its way to giving up :(

If you have the white mayo under the oil cap/on the dipstick or can see the oil mixing in the water header tank and its using water, then the head gasket could of gone, which on the 325i can often cause the head to crack, especially if its over heating. I dont think this would cause a rattle though, just use a lot of water very quickly.
The white mayo can also just be condensation when the car has been left overnight, but it should go when the engine is warm if thats the case.

I know on my dads TD5 Discovery, the water bubbles back into the header tank when revved and I took it to Land Rover cause I thought it was a problem, but the technician said thats what they do.

you do not need mayo on hg failure.sounds as though its exhausting into coolant and possibly hydraulicking.remove and inspect plugs for water.

then pressure test cooling system or use a sniffer on the coolant, oil light would flicker if engine was very low idle.

so would say gasket if your lucky ,c/h if ur not.

local garage could diagnose for ya.

so from your description start with these.

I had loads of Mayo and a perfect head gasket - big big crack in head !

Get a new engine and whack it in or find a decent head.

OK maybe i will get a flaming for suggesting this stuff but I developed a problem on my car last year where the cooling system was being pressurised and when you stopped and switched it off, it was chucking coolant out the breather pipe from the expansion tank.

I was dreading having the head off and all the fannying about with getting it skimmed etc etc.

My old man is 35 years in the motor trade and does repairs on a few people's cars. He said he has given up doing headgaskets and cracked heads now as all he does is glug in some additive to the system and lets it sort the rest out. He's done a diesel shogun with a cracked head about a year ago with this stuff and it's still going strong.

www.kalimex.co.uk it's the stuff called K seal. You can get it in some motor spares places, they have it in my local Wilco/ Motorsave. It's like rad weld but it actually works. They guarantee it for the life of the engine, so it ain't no get you home crap.

What's the worst that can happen? You spend Ԛ£8 on a bottle of this stuff and it don't work? But if it does, then how much hassle have you saved.

At least if you still want to go ahead and repair the problem, you can chose to do it at a time that suits you and your pocket.

just my 2 cents worth
