Removing OBC - Will car still start?

As above.

If I remove an OBC from a car, will it still start, or will it kick the immobiliser in...?

Asking for a friend...

I will bet my m-tech rear spoiler on it.

My other Touring did when I took the OBC out.......

It's a guy on here that's stripping his LHD 325, and I'm having a couple of sets of srpings off him. He's got an OBC in it, and he was afraid that it wouldn't start with it removed... he has limited web access, so I said I'd put up and thread and let him know the outcome.

As for the laydeez... I'VE got no problems there... it's my mate, honest!

On the weekend I swapped my 6 button for a 13 button. Once fitted I was testing all the connectors. Now when I removed the green connector that fits behind the glove box the engine stopped running. Hope this helps, any further questions please feel free to ask.

Oh and by the way I replied to the bloke about our interior.

Any more details, when you reconnected it, did the engine start and run then??

The plug for the immobilisation of the Engine is at the ECU level not under the glove box.

Whats this plug mate? coule be useful as a method of not having your car nicked?!

I didn't mess with the ECU.

The plug was a green one (rectangular 3 pin I believe) and was wrapped up with a white plug (2 pin I think). It connected behind the glove box. If I disconnected this the engine stopped. I didn't think this was anything big as obviously this is disconnecting part of the OBC, and once reconnected the engine ran fine.

Not sure if this is relevant but I have one of the BMW magnetic key security things fitted standard to my car. This is the extra key hole in the drivers door. The key is explained in the BMW manual, where the owner can set the combination and change it just by rotating the magnetic parts of the key. I did not operate this while changing the OBC but having this fitted may explain it. Only guessing.

I am sure someone on here knows why the engine would stop when this connecter was disconnected.

I think thats the connector for the external horn for the CODE function on the OBC............

Dave you need to have the correct engine wiring loom for this to work corectly. Most cars dont have this i have only so far seen about three with the correct looms.

Im lost, i didnt think the E30's had an immobiliser - does the OBC act as an one and if so will retro fitting one then mean my 89 Touring will have an immobiliser

It will only work if it is wired in and you use the old ECU etc etc.

I don't know exactly how you get it sorted to work, but I don't know if it's worth it anyway, apparently it's easily overridden......

I didn't fit it on mine anyway!

The CODE immobilizer function on the 13 button OBCs I've seen, connects into the white two pin plug with green wires above / behind the glovebox. There is sometimes a matching plug with a loop of green wire taped into the loom nearby, which can be plugged into the socket to bypass the imobilizer.
