Yo, right this engine has been rebuilt recently, around 1000 miles ago, but all the work was bottom end.

The top end is has just been cleaned up.
It's making a strange tappet/cammy noise at around 2-3k rpm. I had the tappets reset on saturday to 0.35mm all round when the engine was red hot. Some of them were way too tight and one u could get a brick in.

This has made it run better but the noise is still there, although quieter. Also one of the eccentrics was in the wrong way round which can't help.

No wear on cam lobes either, she's mint looking under the rocker cover
I'm getting a new spray bar 2moro from bmw. Could it be worn rockers? it's mainly coming from the back of the engine numbers 6-5 area

There are a few air leaks which i am also addressing this week

Any ideas what it could be? :?

Cheers

Sounds like worn cam/rocker, especially as you mention it's around cyls 5 and 6, these seem to be the fave as the oil doesn't seem to distribute as well as the rest in this area.

My old sport (billgates) was the same, I rebuilt the top end on that, and the cam was worn worse toward the rear, and that was done when the mileage was about 110k, IIRC the alpina is not far off the same sort of mileage?

Don't worry to much unless it gets louder, at least until it gets back from the 'Ring!

thats the thing Si, the cam has no wear on the lobes all the way along.

Rockers are Ԛ£10 each  and a head off job too from what i can work out

It runs well as it and pulls hard, so i don't think it's down on too much power with the air leaks at the mo

engine was rebuilt on 114,353
it's now on 115,700 ish

The head still has the alpina casting numbers on it, which leads me to guess it's still has the original cam too

There isn't actually alot inside those M20 heads! oh look a valve
