Guy's iv just found an E34 535i with a supposedly tuned engine by hartage taking it up to a 3.6, ??
im defonatly going to have a look at this as i basicly want it, if it's what it say's it is,

but what am i looking for to make sure it's genuine???

should there be some sort of certificate from hartage, to prove they have tuned the engine?

or would there be any tell tail signs that its been worked over?

and if it has been touched by the masters would it not of been bigger than 3.6?

any help on this would be great,

Hopefully this will be of some help,

Hartge did NOT do a production 3.6.

They made 6 variants of the H5 given the Hartge engine designation of MB8E in the 528i E28 210 BHP, MB11E in the 535i E28 240 BHP , MB7E in the 535i E28 254 BHP (higher compression of 10,2:1), the E28 M5 had the M13E pushing 330BHP. Onto the E34 and the 535i had the M25K Hartge engine giving 240 BHP and the 535i 24V used the MB13E again pushing 330 BHP.

I do not know of any 5 series 3.6 engine so tread warily of that claim.

In general the 5 series was given new cam, lightweight pistons, Hartge built cylinder head, Hartge valve cover, Exhaust and manifold, Oval rear tail pipe, upgraded fuel pressure regulator, upgraded oil cooler, Hartge designed AFM, Hartge/Bilstein sports suspension, secondary fuel tank carrying an extra 45 litres, steering wheel and gear knob and finally the extra instrument cluster which showed oil temp, oil pressure and outside temp.

Bodykit was optional as was the monowiper.

Finally, normal fitment of the Hartge 11 spoke Classic wheel rounded the package off.

If the car was produced in Germany at Hartge then the engine will be stamped with the Hartge Logo. If it was converted by Birds (01895 810850) the ring them and give them the registration/vin and they will be able to tell you if it is one that they converted. Bearing in mind that all Hartge Germany produced cars were LHD.

If you need any more info give me a shout.

Exelent cheers hap and iain, you pointed out a lot of good stuff there and
i now know what to look for, and i will tread very carefuly with this, if there is nothing to back up his claim then i think i might just walk away from it,
im going to phone the guy later this afternoon to arange a time to give it a looking over i'll take my cam along for the viewing plesure for you, (fingers crossed)

widge,
its in hartlepool mate, so i think a good long phonecall is in order before i make that trip, and alas the noz beast is in limbo at the mo, not sure what to do with it, turbo e34 2.5? or direct port the M20 as it will be pushing out nearly 300 BHP? but mines on the back burner just now as were right in the middle of converting a 1.8 audi 80 in to a 225bhp TT powerd BEAST!!

there's an e28 H5s on ebay at the moment. Was done for Richard Branson, and that has documented details of the 3.6 m30 engine that Hartge did for this car.

Will be in Total as well in the future I believe.
