I think im about to cry lol, my NEW e30 325 i just bought for Ԛ£2000 with full service history has just decided to sound like its supercharged on the way back from bristol.

My question is guys anyone roughly know how long the dif's last when they whine? Or is there anything i can do to help it last a little? A mate told me to put moly slip oil in, means nothing to me at the moment

Please someone help and give me good news as im very skint at present!!

Cheers :)

A whiney diff is a bit like any woman, it will go on for years and years....

Is it a LSD? if so i wouldn't put molyslip in it....

If it is a LSD then expect to pay Ԛ£250 ish for a 2nd hand diff, if its an open diff then i reckon Ԛ£80 - Ԛ£100.

Assuming it is the diff at fault

Cheers, been on here for a while, on my 3rd e30 had the 316, 318is an now jumped to the six pot :D just had limited access to net before now lol

But yeah assuming the diff is the whine!

its not a slipper so i could put molyslip in then? I hope it is just an oil change, got no money whatsoever from running the thing!

Hopefully get it on a ramp today sometime, is it reckomended to drive till it pops though? Any other damage caused when they go mate?

Not the diff. After thinking and driving, noticed that in 4th gear whine went. Which meant the gearbox as 4th gear doesnt use any cogs. Stuck my head under the car and the filler plug for the gearbox was not there. Hence no gearbox oil whatsoever (bar all over my car) and the whine. Gota plug off my 318is im getting rid of got some gearbox oil and thought right jobs a good one......

Nope, i dont get luck like that, the whine is still there!

My next question is guys, the car has full bmw history, even though i just bought it, can i go back and play hell with them? She still drives, just dam annoying whine. Also am i going to need a new gearbox or will the whine quieten down gradually now oil is in there?

Yep, and i heard something fall off about 3 weeks ago, but couldnt find or see anything wrong (the top plug you cant see fell off). :?

So yep buddy, ran her losing oil for about 3 weeks and she must have gone bone dry yesterday morning when i went to bristol and back!! Should have heard the noise, it was unreal!

She has quietened down a bit, but higher revs in 1st an 2nd still no better!!

Gutted is not the word mate. A mate of mine got a gearbox for me i think, but its just the hassle and the time, i paid that much hoping nothing would need doing majorly soon and i could just look after and mod it!

Cars eh
