Checking a cars history online - what do I do?

Hi all

I know there are some sites that either allow you to type in either a number plate or VIN number for some very basic data on a car.

Can any of you post some links for these?

I know about the paid services such as HPI etc. and I will have one done for a car that I am interested in but I want to see what other data I can gather before I buy.

You can type the number plate in on RAC.co.uk & see when the last owner change etc was...
Best bet's to give your local (or any really!) BMW dealer a call & ask them - they can bring up the original spec sheet for the car

Yes i had a look for it earlier, but i'd be buggered if i could find it, even though i have used it before
