VIN numbers

Need technical Q/A then you're in the right place

I'm a little puzzeled here...I have a 1984 (1987 import RHD) E30 - 320i
BUT
when I use the last 7 numbers of my VIN to identify the car it comes up
E28 525e europe or ZA (South Africa?) with a manufacture date of 11/87

Last 7 numbers are 2010746 and this is the same (untouched) on the body of my car - believed to be imported from South Africa...but no proof....Air/Con no electric windows/sun roof

Any suggestion please

sometimes a manufacturer will issue the same chassis number more than once dont know if bm do but they make bms in sa as well as germany,i have come across it quite a lot on jap cars ...i suppose when one is made 1 side of the world and one the other they dont think they will end up in same country the other thing is the last seven numbers can come up often when you are leaving most of them out

Sounds well dodgy to me, probably a ringer, I wouldn't try selling it like that, it's probably loaded with stolen parts too.... :roll:

hubby's e30 used to show up as a 1987 white 316... its definately a black 318i and have all MOT's from new to show its not been changed colour or engine wise.

How do you check a VIN number aside from asking the dealer?
