THE CAR AS BEEN STOOD FOR A LONG TIME,I HAVE FLUSHED OUT THE WATER SYSTEM,INSTALLED A NEW THERMOSTAT,AND CLEANED OUT THE STEEL VERY SMALL WATER PIPE NEAR THE INJECTORS AS IT WAS BLOCKED.I NOW HAVE WATER CIRCULATION AS THE WATER IS PUMPING INTO THE HEADER TANK SO I PRESUME THE PUMP IS WORKING.THE RAD WILL NOT GET HOT,THE PIPE AT THE BOTTOM OF THE RAD IS COLD ALL THE WAY TO THE BOTTOM OF THE NEW THERMOSTAT.THE TOP OF THE THERMOSTAT IS HOT.I HAVE LOOKED AT THE WIRING ON THE TEMPARATURE SENSOR WHICH GOES DIRECTLY INTO THE THERMOSTAT AND IT LOOKS FINE ALTHOUGH WHEN I PUT A VOLT METER ON IT THERE WAS NO READING.
THERE DOES NOT SEEM TO BE A FUSE FOR THIS SENSOR.
WOULD I GET A READING WITH A VOLT METER.?
IN ADDITION THE TEMPARATURE GAUGE AND THE REV COUNTER ARE NOT WORKING(GOOD THIS BE PART OF THE SAME PROBLEM)
DOES THIS SENSOR HAVE ANYTHING TO DO WITH OPENING THE THERMOSTAT OR IS IT JUST FOR THE DASH READING?

ANY HELP WOULD BE APPRECIATED.

The sensor located in the thermostat housing is for the electrical fan, and has nothing to do with the thermostat opening or the temp guage.

Are the aux belts tightened OK? Are they turning the water pump properly, if the car has been stood for this amount of time, maybe the waterpump is seized? Waterpump is easy to change on the S14, but new ones are expensive.

The temps sensor for the guage is located in the metal pipe that runs along the lower part of the rocker cover, it's brown, there is a blue one too, and this is for the ECU.

I'm wondering, how long are you letting the engine run for? Maybe it's not getting upto temp for the thermostat to open?

If you are certain the pump is working then that's OK...

You need to get the guage working again, remove the instrument cluster, and IIRC, there's an earthing nut on the back, behind the temp guage/rev counter, tighten this up to get them working again, and check to see what temp the guage is saying, and then come back and report your findings.

PS, could you stop shouting and switch the CAPS LOCK off!

OK Simon(caps lock off)true to form the earthing nut to the back of the rev counter, temp guage area was loose, however, it still does not workwhen tightened.
In addition I let the car tickover as long as I dare to see if the themostat would open, the top half of the thermostat was too hot to touch but it still did not open.

Any ideas!!!

Regards.
Glenn.

Brianmoore is needed to solve your electrical problem, you really need to get this working to see what sort of temp the car is getting too.

Does the fan switch on at all?
