Can you swap a 2.0 for a 2.5 or 2.7 without changing any electronics. I have a 1986 320i that is in mint shape and would like to keep it.
2.0 to 3.?

Thought someone said once that a 2.0 ECU and a 2.5 ECU were the same except for the chip. If so, you can use a 2.0 ECU with the appropriate chip on a 2.0, 2.5, or 2.7.gcorky wrote:in a word no m8.ecu matches engine.can use the 2.5 ecu for the 2.7 with a tweaked chip in.

ive got tables here that will show like ecu across engine range but not model .dunno could be wrong .
even so why spend 50 quid plus on a chip when youd get a ecu s/h for a quarter of that??
but lumpy is asking about a conversion where he will be reqd to alter his vehicle electronically???so i stand firm here ...lol and still say no!!!....

yes it will work.
but as above, swap the 072 ecu for the 073 and off you go.

this is lumpys question .why do you all say it will work ,even putting a chip in is changing electronics ???? why would some of you chip your original ecu than fit a better quality ,cheaper, more suited option and easier to fit?????Lumpy wrote:![]()

sorry lumpy if we are confusing you but i think this is the gray area which i think we are interpritting differently:
without changing any electronics
i think the above threads are seeing a chip change as non electronic change where as i am.
i think i am correct in saying you want your car 100 percent and not just to work
honestly it is easier just to plug the correct ecu in than strip it to fit new chip.

i would have to disagree gcorky! you say strip as if you have to rip the car apart and hot wire a few capacitors on the 2.0 ecu!!
Changing an ecu chip is the very very same as changing a light bulb.
so its quite easy
and as for the rest of the components in a 2.5 ecu being different to a 2.0 i just dont think so
i could be wrong though, very wrong!!
lumpy- your avatar sucks balls mate (its too big and makes the forum looks stupid!) at least knoock it down to 150 px or something kinder like that, not 600 by 600!

Avitar removed, please resize Lumpy
To answer the post correctly....... you can upgrade the 2.0 to a 2.7 but to get any benifits you'll need a 325 intake manifold, injectors,AFM, and you'll need top remove your Jetronic ECU and replace with a motronic fully mappable setup from a later 88 on 320 or a 325
The ECU you have now is fuel only, and the sparks are on a mech dizzy, not good for relaibility or power.
standalone would be a good option too.

Ah yes mate, it opens up so many options to you, and as your project grows and parts get swopped out, you can alter everything to get the best outa the Ԛ£Ã”šÃ‚£ invested
nothing wrong with motronic, its fully mappable but there are some major restrictions , the main one being the AFM.
Given Lumpy's requirements, its a useful option to add to the list, either way some rewiring is required so why not go the whole hog, if nothing else all the engine loom would then be new, thats gotta be worth a few Ԛ£Ã”šÃ‚£ on its own, just for peace of mind

Maybe it's better to grab a used 2.5 or 2.7 complete and rebuild it. Drop it in aned call it a day. Of course there is always looking for a different car to start with. Maybe go to a 2dr 3.25.
P.S. Changed avatar. Sorry. is this one okay

i had a 1987 2.0
i replaced the engine with the 525e engine.
used 525e loom and autobox etc.
takes a good weekend to do the swap.
i have now fitted the 731 head and its pulling about 200bhp ish with mega torque.

look gcorky dont get ratty!!
i was wrong anout the ecu not doing spark and fire sorry! i did say that...
i never TOLD anyone to do anything
as for my light bulb point i was referrring to the simillarity of plugging something in to a socket which is what an ecu or chip does. i was not writing a tech guide.....
do using those smileys help you vent your anger?
