The great about E30s is that owners can do alot of work themselves on them. However, some people should not be allowed near a set of pliers or spanners.
Take the stereo system in the iS I bought. The backlights and memory don't work so I guess it was wired wrong. There are 6x9s in the back shelf, but instead of using spacer rings the a*****e who fitted them decided to cut part of the shelf underneath. Its not a structural problem, but they didn't even do a tidy job of the cutting!
There are other small examples, but it really annoys me as the more I scour the car the more items I find. No big things, but they do take time and effort to put right. Hopefully, it should be back to original factory spec by the summer.

For every E30 with 6x9"s in it I have seen one with the metal cut beneath it, and like you say none to tidy. This is the only reason I don't have them in mine yet.

Well you aint seen mine then with the 6X9's Fitted in the back shelf !!!!
I used 3/4" MDF To mount the speakers on instead on having to bodge the metal shelf underneath, it looks very nice......

You don't really need 6x9's, you can get some pretty powerful 6" circular speakers that will go straight in. Although I don't know a huge amount about ICE, I would have thought this would be satisfactory...

i went to Autoquip and spent Ԛ£14.99 on some black plastic spacers that do the job loverly, and they dont look too bad with rear headrests.....
Gaffa tape is like "the force" - it has a light side, a dark side, and it holds the universe together.

This is what I don't understand, it's much easier to make or buy spacers than try to hack out a hole in the metal of the rear shelf. But of course Mr. Idiot had to do it the hard way in my car
I don't have anything against 6x9s, providing they're fitted properly.
