feeling in a mood to get things done this morning so i think i'll drop the subframe and sump to tap it for the turbo oil return

only question is what size thread shall i tap it to?

i'm thinking i want a lot of flow, so i was going to tap it to the size of the smaller power steering pump banjo connection, which is something like m14 x 1.5.

i haven't sorted the return pipe yet but i guess if i do it this size i can use PAS pipe/connections if all else fails.

any thoughts (i.e. is that too big)

not sure where i'll get the tap from though, mine don;t go that big

Use a surface mounted return fitting Toby, the Landrover/320D unit is cheap and easily found, alternative is the merc C250TD unit, both accept a standard 5/8th hose no problemo, no leaks on mine in almost a year too

the sump is too thin and grainy to reliably use a banjo IMHO,

suface mount= 1x 10mm hole for return flow, 2x M6 bolts , job done fella

I have a spare Garrett retun fitting for the turbo if req btw ??

ok we'll just quietly forget that i've spend the last 15 mins filing myself a suitable tap from an old banjo bolt because i can't find one :D

that's good Ant, tbh seems a better solution to me. i've just heard too many people talking about tapping their sumps... mostly on e30tech winkeye

just incase you know - what's the bolt spacing for the mount bolts?

i'm assuming the same as either turbo oil inlet or outlet (i.e. approx 38.5mm or 51mm centre to centre)

you've got a few hours m8, gotta drop the subframe and have the sump off first!

if you have one spare you don't need i'll happily buy it

The return is above the baffle plate level and way above the oil level.

8)

I have some internal pix somewhere .......

edit: that silicone steam hose was a temp fit , we used that so see the oil flow was correct.

As said don't be tapping it, its way to thin to be doing that, its asking for leaks. I used a gas fitting that clamps up to either side of the sump, seems to work very well for me and its positioned in the same place as in the picture G corky supplied.
