strip the paint off and then you need to get stuck in with some p1500 paper and before that perhaps some wire wool and use some Autosol metal polish.

It's a right ballache and takes forever, made easier if you have some sort of polishing disc attachment for a drill.

You will not get the chrome finish very easily

trick is to use a heavy grit and work down to a fine grit with soapy water

So is the timing cover alloy?

Best way to do it is to strip any paint off with Nitro-mors, and sand back the cast surface finish with say...200grit paper. Then gradually get finer and finer up until 1500 wet and dry. Then, get yourself to a Motorbike store, and buy a polishing kit (should include a couple of mops on drill bits, a couple of bars of compound) and get to it. To protect the surface, use something like Mr Sheen (I know...) to stp the road salt getting to it - it shouldn't be too bad as its not very exposed, but its better to do that than to repolish it every time you go to a show or something :D

Hope this helps someone
