is there any way of boosting the bhp the same way as the "325 manifold on a 2.8 head" ?

or can a 316 head be swapped for a 1.8 / 1.9 head if they use the same block?

i read in total bmw, the 316 is pretty much a 1600 so not much in the way of swapping parts etc. If you want ur 316 to seem fast, maybe install a sport exhaust and a K&N filter......or just turbo the Fu*ker

If you want it to seem fast you could also take the windscreen out :)

If it's the 1.6 engine then it'll be the M40 so the same mods that you'd perform on an E30 316i would apply, i.e. chip, BBTB and exhaust. Pretty pointless on a 1.6 though especially in a car as heavy as the E36.

Not saying I wouldn't have a 316i coupe though - I just wouldn't bother trying to make a slow car quicker.

i was just interested as iԚ´ve seen models marked as 1.6 but have 1.8 / 1.9 liter variants inside.

i just asumed the head was different to accomodate the increase in cc

96 hp is a bit pathetic iԚ´ll agree. could alway poke yԚ´head out the sunroof

Depending on the year there are very big gains to be had from chipping them. (very big as in compared to stock power figures)

The difference in year is in the ecu used and the software on the ecu.

It will be a chip swap and will most likely be a 276 ecu bosche but will be coded too and ews control.
You would need this read and the code pulled off the original and put onto a modified chip.
Gains will be around the 12hp mark.

Er, the 8-valve M40 (early engine) and 16-valve M43 (later engine) are quite different I can assure you.

If you know of a chip that can give anywhere near 12bhp on an M40 1.6, I'd like to know about it.

If you want an E36 316i to seem fast, get one of your mates to run alongside it from a standing start. Then when you eventually overtake them you can revel in the glory of your outstanding performance....

The funny thing is, there not slow.
OK, so there not in the same league as the bigger engined cars but for an e36 with all its weight the thing goes very well.
