I am just about to sell my set of 5 Hartge 15" wheels for a set of 4 Alpina's and I am in a bit of a dilemma as to what to do for a spare wheel. Do I just find a steel wheel for a spare, or try and track down a single 17" style Alpina.
This transaction is likely to take place this weekend, so am a bit concerned in case of a puncture!
So calling all E30 owners with non standard wheels. What have you done?

Will screw the diff up if you have different size wheels on the back.
My suggestion is to buy a can of tyre weld geez....

Thanks for that, so do you just find a scrapy for a single steel wheel?
I have been looking on Ebay but with no joy

???
How will a spare of the correct (high) profile inflated to the correct pressure have a different diameter to a low-profile tyre on a 17" wheel?

Obviously if the have the same diameter it wont, but if they are out then it wont do your diff any favours will it? Chances are a 14" bottletop is going to have to have a huge tyre on it to match the diameter of a 17" alpina rep even with rubber band tyres....

If this is true, you could either drive a 50mph or just put the smaller wheel at the front.
I think brianmoore said that on average cars get a punture ever 80 000 miles...
You can always get that foam spray stuff

Im in the same situation just, purchased 4 Hartge wheels but will sell my BBS's as a set of 5.
I think you dont actually need a spare wheel for the MOT as I believe TVR's just come with a can of tyre weld but I would like to have a spare.
My thoughts were along the lines of getting a space/weight saver spare that would get through the MOT. ie could you buy a lightweight raceing rim with the same rolling radious but a smaller width to cut down on costs and weight? I dont know
I think its one of these catch 22 things if it has one it has to work but if you dont have one it doesnt matter. Like rear seatbelts if you have them they have to work but if you dont have them it doesnt matter

95.7% of statistics you read are completely bollocks. How can you guess when you will get a puncture? I have covered 90k in two years in my van without a single one, but had two in less than three weeks in my Audi A3.

Can't see the proplem with huge tyres on 14" wheels - I've got silly balloon tyres on my 2-door and they're fine.
Would certainly have no problem with using one as a spare for however many miles is required with 3 other 17" wheels.
It's the most convenient option in my opinion rather than messing around with tyre weld, which is useless if you blow a tyre etc.

A space saver is'nt neccesarily cheaper. A cheap tyre for one cost's Ԛ£120 plus VAT!
This situation with the diff nackering should'nt really effect an open diff otherwise every car would need the right size for MOT to prevent diff lock on a motorway!
Also, why are you swapping Hartges for Alpina rep's?

Yes I agree, the size of the wheels should not be a problem be it a 65/14 or 55/15 or 40/17, they should ( I think!) work out the same size, its mainly a case of tracking down a single wheel. yes a bottle top wheel could be a good option. the problem is most are being sold as a complete set.

Why? 15" V's 17" the Pina's look sweet, the Hartge's are just too small and I am a bit bored of them. I've had the car nearly 10 years. it was time for a change.

Original Hartge V's Aplina reps, not contest, Hartge all the way if nothing else but the quality/weight of the wheels

mine's a standard bottlecap.
195 65 R14 to 215 40 R17 = 0.88% difference in wheel diamiter.

you can get alpina reps on ebay now in 17's with tyres for Ԛ£299
there are loads on here with alpinas so get another 3 and split the
cost, expensive i know but then you will have a mint spare that
matches the rest of your set (which is very rare nowadays)
just an idea if budget permits

DO NOT ust that tyre weld stuff they sell with Minis etc...
If you get a humble puncture wit tha thorn or a nail and you tyre weld it then when you get to the garage the chances are that even if it is a fix able puncture they wont be able to plug it as the tyre weld stays liquid and stops the glue drying/going off, so it'll be a new tyre, or if the do fix it it could pop out and loose air again.
Get a steel spare.
And if they are original Hartges don't sell them, they are way cooler than Alpinas.

But 15" v's 17" ?
A set of 16" Hartge's perhaps, but the 15's are too small,
Selling them with Eagle F1's (in good nick) for Ԛ£300 to a chap with a basic looking 316i
I may be a fool I know. But I have always loved the Pinas!

lol, that's why it's "on average" and not "OllieB's cars"

there is someone else balancing it out...
