I've just fitted an E36 steering rack to my e30, I bought the pipe kit from Ian332isport and got hold of an E36 rack from the breakers for Ԛ£40.

I spent all yesterday afternoon fitting it which was relatively easy but I ran out of light so I resumed today which involved fitting the return pipe and bleeding the system.

This is where it all went Pete Tong.

After filling I bled the system and found 2 leaks, one at the return pipe banjo bolt and the other from the flexi hose in the pipe kit. I tried repeatedly to tighten the olive nut on the flexi but found that it was actually coming from the swaged joint so I couldn't do anything with that one.

I went to tighten up the banjo bolt to stop the other leak and found that the thread in the rack was completely stripped. B@stard.

I need the car for work tomorrow so I was left with a knackered rack and a faulty pressure hose so I lost my rag with it ripped it all out and proceeded to smash seven shades of sh!t out of the whole assembly with a 10lb sledge hammer :x . That felt much better.

So I've refitted and bled the old e30 rack and that's the way it's gonna stay.

F@ck the rack conversion, it's cost me Ԛ£90 and 2 days of my time faffing around with it to no avail.

I'm off to have a shower and think of all the other things I should have spent my money on

In a word : BOLLOCKS !!!!

If you'd driven a car with the conversion then I think you'd have percivered with it. The difference is phenominal.

I know it wont work;

the manifold on an Is is tubular and very well designed from the factory. The Dutch (above) on here tried it on his IS an it did not work; it would not clear the manifold; also, even with aftermarket manifolds, (if you can find one), the clearnance between the rack and the manifold itself is so small its unnacceptable

Bloody hell geese :(
I thought it would work on any E30 as TOURINGDADDY has put an M3 rack on his 325i Tourer and did'nt need to change the pipe's either, just moved the rack forward to accompany the original pipe's

I don't want to tell you how to work on a car as you sound like you know your stuff (and i'm being nice because i want to pick your brain at some point on how you re-built your diff :) )
But, evo-stick hard and fast would have cured the leaking pipe (even if only temporary) and did you fit new crush washers with the banjo ?
You only have to loosen them and re-tighten them for them to leak (there shit) but only cost a few pence.

I need to do mine at some point, especialy after last week when i used the car after driving a van with 3 turns lock to lock all week, i backed out the garage and turned 1 1/2 turns as if i was in the van and proceded to drive straight into the wall

Stick with it it's got to be worth it in the end 8)
There is NO nucleus.

..and spin it, and spin it, and spin it, and spin it, and spin it, and spin it just over 4 turns lock to lock for PAS.
Even 3.2 is not that quick, many run of the mill cars have under 3 turns lock to lock. I got my old car down to 2.2, that was great except for having to manually cancel the indicators all the time.

I have power steering, would having less turn lock to lock make any difference to the strength/power needed to turn the wheel

Hi, I did use new seals on the banjo's. The problem was the thread had stripped out of the rack so I couldn't tighten it.

I'll try again this summer probably, and try to use the original hoses rather than the pipes that I bought (they're well battered now  ).

Ho hum, another lesson learned

Question: Why do you need to buy the new, modified pipes, if the old ones would have fitted anyway...? Me being stupid and all...

Don't you just know it

You can't see the little bits of ally all over the patio because of the snow but there are lots. The rack is bent like 'nana too

Giles, I was under the impression that the E36 pipes would not fit. I still reckon the 6 pot pipes won't because when I fitted this rack I used a 4 pot e36 return pipe that doesn't have the ' oil cooler' part in it and it only just squeezed in between the rack and the sump. Also I'm pretty sure the e36 return pipe is too short to reach the reservoir and is also points forwards instead of upwards. Not an easy pipe to bend without kinking it.

Maybe I'll attempt it again in better weather and with another rack, strangely I get the impresiion that this rack is no longer oil tight winkeye

Cheers,

Iain T
