Hi there, Picked my E30 316i up yesterday, told it needed a fuel pump, got it home last nite, had a look this morning, checked it by, by-passing the relay still nothing, No Noise, No petrol coming through.... Whats the easiest way to change the pump, and any other advice ??

Thanks

Whitterz

lift the back seat, find the pump under the underlay, undo bolts/ screws/ pipes, twist slightly to remove iirc

you should test it first to see if its broken.
connect the pump directly to 12 Volts.
the green wire is +
the brown wire is -

yes... but if the pump isnt working, the system shouldnt be under pressure. (Normal pressure is 3 Bar)

You have to undo the four nuts on the top of the fuel pump assembly and pull out the level sender first, otherwise it won't come out through the hole.
Smoking is not recommended while doing this job!

Ive got the sender out, and undone the fuel pipes, but there doesnt seem to be any slack in the pipes to get them off ??? also, how would u recomend twisting the fuel pump, i dont want to hit it with a screwdriver, because it might cause a spark, and be BYE BYE Mr Whitterz

Ive just replaced mine and it took 10 mins from old one out to new one in. The pipes will pull off. Just have a rag at hand to wipe up the residue fuel in the pipes. unless they are perished then just wrestle them off. My pump twisted out by hand, just like changing a light bulb. I got a re-con pump from bmbitz (Ԛ£55 delivered). however, my car has given up again and will not start. It turns over but wont fire. I had an original problem of a stuck airflow meter which was rectified but not replaced. I think this may have led to the fuel pump giving up. Now it wont start again and i,m hoping its something simple to fix. Does anyone know how Ican diagnose this problem?

Fuel pump relays not in there mate, it is under the plastic cover that runs along the bulkhead

There's a black plastic cowling running along the bulkhead, pull it off and you will see two relays - the nearside one (orange) is for the fuel pump.

so is the original fault with the pump or the relay? If my car has the same problem (wont start) could it be the relay? Is there a way of testing this?

I am a Plonker..... Last nite i thought the battery was completely Flat, so i left the relay Bypass wire in, Went down to the car after work @ 2pm, plugged in the new battery, and plugged the bypass wire back in.... Nothing from the fuel pump, wired it to the battery.... Nothing, I removed the fuel pump, and its fried :( now i still need a fuel pump :( :( :(

Ahh well..... Maybe this was the cause of the relay going too.....

Least i know it has been replaced :D

it could just be a blocked filter at the bottom of the pump.

ok ive had this sort of problem before on a 318is, if you connect the fuel pump direct to the battery and it starts working put original wires back on drive it and at some point it cuts out with out starting again look at the alarm, immobilizer as this is wired/cut into the fuel line wires, if you have one of these fitted disconnect it and rejoin the wires and try again.
