Hello all

Please can someone or all of you help me? I have always wanted an E30 bmw for many years, anyway last saturday I bought 1 a 318i on a H plate and I think its a dog when I bought the car I was told the only problem with the car is a tie bar bush on the rear was gone :x . That didn't bother me at all, my friend had a tie bar bush go on his audi and we replaced it. Please find below a list of problems with the bmw I would really appreciate any help you people can give me I have wanted one for so long now, and now I have one (a bad 1) I feel I must go back to my trusty VW Golf.

Get the coffee going I think you may need it

1, Mega vibration on the car when you drive, I have since been told that it's a rubber bush in the middle of the prop. Is this an easy part to replace?

2, One hell of a leak in the boot again told that it's rear screen leaking, Boot seal leaking, Rear lights leaking or the inner wheel arches are shot. I can deal with but all three I think I can see a local scrap yard calling me.

3, I have no answers for this There is no intermittent on the wiper's and if you turn them off mid sweep they stop in the middle of the screen. sorry found the intermitent it starts and stops mid screen and then juders for about an inch and then juders another inch so by then Ive turned it off.

4, the power steering pump makes a whining noise when cold and is stiff as a porn stars didgery doo on viagra.

5, The interior lights is only permanently on or off, so if I get in the car in the dark I spend 5 mins fumbling with my keys.

6, When I start the car from cold it hesitates and splutters until I plant my foot on the throttle and rev the nuts off it but then it still splutters a bit until about 200 mtrs down the road.

7, The sunroof only opens on one side and has never heard of slide if you try that all I get is a spinning and then a little lump on sunroof handle.

If any one can help then please any response is great but then again if you think I should cut my losses and get rid I shall you people know about these I have only ever worked on old MG Midgets and an old audi Gt. coupe and my mk2 and 3 golfs.
Thanks people and please try not to laugh too much at me.

Kind regards

Mark

no laughs from me! Welcome to the 'zone.

1) rubber doughnut on RWD cars is common between propshaft and diff (or is it prop and box on the E30?) - should be easy - crawl under and have a look; if it is shredded you should be able to tell

2) take all the trim/carpet out (and let it dry out), get rid of the water and watch where it comes in from - the rear lights are the easy fix - take them out, clean them up and put black sealant and/or new rubbers

3) is well known - my old 318 did this - you need to clean the wiper motor apparently (look on the 'Articles - Technical Menu' section for a thread)

4) change the PAS fluid ASAP and as Brian Moore would say 'keep your fingers crossed'

don't know about the rest, but someone will be along soon to help - friendly bunch they are, these 'zoners :D

take out and clean the switch in each doorframe for the interior lights. put a bit of wd40 on them when they are cleaned and put back you will hear the relay click as you operate them if this works you will also see your electric windows start to work when the doors are open

ah now I've just remembered

6) the electronic thingy which decides how much air goes in failed on my 318, and I had exactly those symptoms; very poor running from start-up until a few miles were under the belt. I got a 2nd hand one, and the car ran perfectly. Someone will come along and say what the proper name is soon
it's on the passenger side, and is just in front of the rubber curvey bit of the air intake.... I wish I had my Bentleys with me

ps fyi - an H-reg 318 will have the M40 engine (rather than the earlier M10 engine)

That's all the answers pretty much to your questions. It's all I was going to offer too.

Wiper motor is easy to do. Just follow the guide in the Articles section.

Giles.
