would pistons from an m42 fit an m40? straight fit? machining required?

Isn't one DOHC and the other SOHC?

i think they run similar blocks if not the same?

Yeah but the top of the piston will have different shape cut outs as the double cam engine will have twice as many valves as the SOHC engine.
