Unless you want to spend a few quid and upgrade to something like Eibach's, stick with the stock items - they are the same size as 325i sport items (and bigger than 316, 318, 320 items).

i have heard that the sport roll bars are 20mm on the front 14.5mm at the back
on the 323i the fronts are 18.5mm and the backs 12mm
would it make much of a difference
what size are the eibachs

From what I remember, the IS has the largest stock arb's fitted (20mm front, 14.5mm back) apart from the six cylinder convertibles which have 21mm front.

There's a section on this in the e30 restoration bible book - there's no upgrade you can really take on a 318is using standard parts (other than the front from the convertible mentioned earlier). The eibach's are the same size (as quoted from the book) 'The difference is that the Eibach bar is shorter from the fron to the back, meaning less leverage and stronger anti-twist properties. They are also made with three tie-rod mounting positions so the strength can be altered'
Hope this helps!
