Thats what the hunting lobby said years ago...There would be cross party support for a piece of "green" legislation like this...I wouldnt dismiss it easily6potWil6pot wrote:That'll never pass, it would bankrupt councils cause ppl would just dump their cars!

This will never happen.
1. A huge number of companies would go out of buisness over night. Small companies garages etc who keep local economies afloat.
2. A vast number of blairs voters survive only because of the avalibility of cheap cars. The public transport system is not up to filling the gap. How would cleaners etc get to work, these are the people who keep the country functioning.
3. It would cost the government Billions to scrap all those cars at once AND meet the new euro legislation on vehicle disposal.
Blair is a complete f*cking tit.
But he is not stupid he will realise this.

This has been knocking about for years! As long as I've had classic cars anyway so at least 6 years.
Last time I heard of it, we were all gonna be offered some derisory sum to part with our pride and joy. Now if you had a 2CV then the flat rate Ԛ£500 would probably sound great, but Ԛ£500 in return for your genuine Shelby Cobra is getting a bit silly.
I for one couldn't give a shit about foxes, but if I'm forced into a front wheel drive car cos mine's too old I'll be livid!

those in power want more new car sales coz they all get richer. they tell the unsuspecting public that new cars are more environmentally friendly - a more bare faced lie than the reasons we were given for bombing iraqi civilians.
i hadn't better type any more - i'll be here all night.

the fumes that escape from the raw unused petrol when your filling up your tank is more than what you would create driving for quite a distance (can't remember exact disatance) but the numbers were ridiculuos.

I saw this on MIG a few weeks ago and nearly had a heartattack until I kept reading. There is simply no way they could get away with all of that. The companies would lose millions and the population would go crazy - I HOPE!
I'd definitely be out in force to stop them. I really hate the government these days. Its just one rediculous thing after another.

Do you notice what they do? The suggest something totally stupid. It gets rejected.
Then they slllloooooowwwwllllyyyyy introduce it once people accept that, that is the way it is going to be......
The goverment, isn't interested in the environment at all! What kind of goverment thinks it is better to scrap old cars to replace them with new?
Emissions is one thing, but what about the car itself?????
Why didn't they carry on the Free tax for Historic Transport?

it doesnt seem to have really come up, apart from the comment about cobra's, that they could hardly get people to ditch their classic cars, plenty of them are worth $hitloads and it's really just not something you could consider imo..

I just assumed there would be a special clause for Bugatti/Cobra/Ferrari owners. If there isn't then it'll never happen there is literally billions of Ԛ£ of classics in this country for MG A's to Zagato's.

Wonder how many of them actually drive their cars though, don't suppose there'll be a law against keeping them in a heated museum.

I'll find a mint alpine shell, and we'll chuck everything onto it from your car. I'll even let you drive it if you come over for a holiday. Can't say fairer than that Ian!

I would love to see the politicians faces as they realise most of Londons old Routemaster buses are over 30 years old.
Where have all the buses gone????
My MG is 38 years old, and the BM is 15 next year
plus my van is 12 years old this year too. I'm sure the g'ment will all give us a generous 0% loan to buy a new stock of vehicles!!!

This year I have taxed 4 of my 6 cars. Ԛ£720!!!
On the way to work this morning and had a blow out after driving through a pot hole the size of Huddersfield. So what do I pay so much tax for...oh yeah I remember....the Ԛ£30K a piece gatso's and the Ԛ£4K it costs to install them, the shiny buttons on traffic wardens uniforms and other pointless expenditures.
In 2 months time Essex Police will be turfing out the travellers on the Crays Hill site opposite my work. 600 of them! With an expected bill payable by the taxpayers of Ԛ£1million! I can see another steady hike in taxes during the next budget.

As the resident greeny here: i can safely say that this law to ban 15 year old cars with never come into force.
Its probably just a consultative paper or something, you would not believe how many different consultative papers on various different legislation are drawn up. 95% never comes into force.
Reasons why it won't happen:
1:Uneconomical
A; Could never you public funds to give people money for the old car, not a chance
B; In 2008 Car Manufactures will have to pay for the dismanterling and recycling of thier old cars, (this is European Legislation, Europe is not all bad!) If all cars over 15 years had to be dismantled it would cost them Ԛ£millions. So manufactures would not be infavour of this either.
C; As said before it would screw small garages.
D; The fuel companies would cry, they still have a lot of pressure in the gov.
2; Unenvironmental
A; Against popular belief old cars are not that much more pulloting than new cars, fundementaly because they use the same fuel. Manufactures will try and make you think otherwise though. Same with safety really in many cases. MPG etc etc are manufactures NEW claims, it really depends on the state of service of a car. As older cars are more likely to be owned by enthusiasts, who want then to run as best as possible, which useually means green, unlike that repmobile who wants to stretch their service schedual as much as possible.
B; On average people change their car ever 3 years. In 15 years thats 5 different cars, thats way more pollution that any 15 year old car would make in comparision. I.e most pollutions is emmited during the manufacturing stage.
C; The world doesn't have enough resources to replace cars that often, just think of all the extra raw materails that we would have to mine/export etc, Recycling isn't that good either (i know its what i do)
3 Manufactures would make crap cars that would only last 15 years.
4 Government has actually signed up to a set of European Union principals that want to curb our "throw away society", scrapping 15 years old cars directly goes against this.
Basiclly someone has got their knicker in a twist. An we can all pat ourselves on the back because YOU ARE BEING GREEN< Driving an older car, rather than keep on changing new ones.
