Anyway, he has it fitted and working now and its awesome! Really seems to work well. He took me for a run in it and I cant believe how quick it stops. The discs are huge and squeezed under 16" wheels. Looks ace aswel!

Today I met up with Dave (baddave), he has a new tourer. A 325i which is dam cool. However, you may remember that he had a post in group buys for an uprated brake kit.

Had a lil go of it. Didn't realise how quick 325's were. Stops so well. Put my IS to shame a bit!lol. Seems to know his stuff. Once I go to uprate my brakes Im tempted in going for them. Just need 16" wheels though.

Nice to see Dave has done this upgrade, if i were using 16's i'd be tempted to have a set off him if he sells them.
I havn't seen him on here for a while ?

A good running 318is should out accelrate a stock 325i.
Would be good to see some pics of these brakes?

Oh right. Cool. His 325i ain't stock though.lol.
I ain't got pics but hopefully when he is back online he will post some up. if not, i will get some when I next meet up with him. The look huge! He has also put wheel spacers on to clear them. Seems a really good set up to me.

I dont know exactly what to explain.
I had (have) a M42 engine in a 318i four door, it has some very simple bolt on modifications and it can easily hold its own with lots of 325i cars. I alos had a stock 318is with no mods and you can ask Davetouring or Karan or Jitvv of its ability to out run 2.5s.

From what I remember your good running iS could just about even keep up with my 525i Touring Auto let alone a good running 325i!Demlotcrew wrote:A good running 318is should out accelrate a stock 325i.

I'd really like to know how a 136 bhp no torque 318iS will beat a 170 bhp 325i??
Your theories and so called facts are beginning to worry me.

Power / Weight
(bhp / 1000kg)
325=141
318is=125
Maybe yours was fitted with the S14 engine. 318is=170

They're 302mm disks I think, didn't take much notice in the group buy thread at the time, sounds like a bargain setup.

no no it's true Andrews 318's used to give good 325's a hard time, Dave and Karan plays others can be witnesses to this!

Yeah it is a bargain. Tempted in the future in going for 16" wheels so that I can get the setup. Wish I had got a piccy of it actually because it looks so good!

the iS has less power but less weight and lower overall gearing
BMW made sure the car was quicker than a Mk2 golf 16V and we all know the golf is as quick as a 325i under 110mph, then the 2.5 shows its hand and pulls a gap.
I feel qualified in this statement having owned a mint 16V 1990 2 door , a Mk1 1800 and a 325 sport at the same time. Mk1 was easily the fastest below the ton BTW but maxed out @ 116mph
regardless of the quoted figures with lower overall gearing Demlots statement does hold water.

Your 325i was a bit low on power compared to most so its not really a fair comparison.
His M3 engined 318iS is meant to be as quick as the best 2.7's yet it couldnt touch the Alpina at Aces.

Anyway Andrew has an unfair advantage he has AIDS and weighs 6 1/2stone !

hehe, I hope baddave gets online soon then he can give all the tec specs and that. Couldn't believe it when he pointed them out. They really fill up a 16" wheel. Vastly improves stopping distances. The wheels need to be spaced too. pretty sure his calipers are off of a 7series.
heres what he said in his post:
I'm currently working on a 302mm diameter 28 mm thick brake upgrade and can supply machined disks and adapter rings for the E30 hubs.
These will only fit inside a 16" rim or larger.
I'll leave you to source calipers(can supply details of suitable vehicles)
Final costs have still to be worked out
I'm still waiting for suppliers to get back to me with prices.
Should be significantly cheaper than the nearest equivalent RallyDesign/Wilwood kits

ye i raced dave in his touring and was quicker in that standard iS....... i think a 318is is identical to a 325 til 110mph.... its cos of the gearing i think and the weight

how much is the kit?
I ask cos I fitted M3 running gear and the 280mm disks all round for not too much. Meant a big swap to 5 stud wheels etc too but improved handling.
One to bear in mind.
Jai
ps: i've done 325I's over off of roundaouts, the handling and brakes were much better on mine though, M3 stuff. Only after ages did it accelerate past me and he was ragging the nuts off it. (so was I though

Brakes sound awesome.
My IS is about the same as a 2.5 up until higher speed. I dont have the sweetest of engines and also have some split vacume pipes, but up to 70 at least there wasnt much in it.
Although ive gota admit, id chose a 2.5 anyday, as the option for more power is a hell of a lot more accesible.
Any pics of these brakes?

As for the 318is VS 325i
Dont quote the power and torque peak figures..
Draw the graphs of torque vs RPM in each gear and take area under curves of all overlaps to find the power dissipated.. The 325 will be higher, but not that much.
That made sense to someone!

A standard 325 must not be very fast then as my car would destroy one. No offense to 318IS owners, just commenting.

Been really busy until about 4 weeks ago(lost my job) and as James said-both my computers have got some problems (1 is defo terminal coz I swung a big sledgehammer at it cos I was that P*#@ed off with it).
Get yourself some 16 or 17 alpinas or hartge's for that touring of yours and I'll get your brakes sorted for ya.
The sut up is as follows
1 pr Carefully selected 302mm by 28mm disks modified to fit
1 pr 15mm thick caliper brackets(to resist twisting)
And
1 pr of Brembo's from an E38 728i (suitable calipers from other vehicles could always be used
And
Most importantly, the ABS still works
Last time I posted this Idea on the zone most who replied to the post were more negative with there comments than you Andy/bootyman and a couple of others. So at that time I thought i'd just get on with it and do the conversion for myself.
For those of you who are SERIOUSLY interested then please PHONE ME on 01466-700281 or 07732-622505 coz I've only got limited computer access at the present ime
or get in touch with James(hammoj28) my sales and marketing manager

Adammcf, yeh tbh mate, although the IS can be fairly quick.A nice sport, making factory figures, espeically torque wise will beat an IS, end of. The extra weight etc dosnt equate to that much when you put them in a race and the extra low down torque of a sport will on most occasions beat an IS.

Hi Dave, i'm not in a postion to lay out money now as i've found out today i might be made redundant, 50 or so jobs are going to be cut down to 12 at the end of March.BadDave wrote:
