Just need clarification.

If a vehicle is HPI clear, that clearly means that it hasn't been in any accident.

A mate of mines just bought a car last week. He has a report which clearly states the vehicle is HPI Clear, but the guy he bought it from said it was accident repaired.

What is going on.

Will try to get hold of the HPI form and upload.

Another question, how does a buyer know if their car has a CAT C/D associated to it? Does the Insurance company know? Or does the owner need to notify the insurance company that their car is CAT C/D?

if it was a cat d, and its been repaired and VIC tested, and passed it will be taken off the record,

but cat c has to be tested and it wont be taken off

the hpi list and categories of write off are not fool proof,on the one hand cars can be written off but not recorded but on the other you can buy unrecorded salvage only to find it on the list when you check. some cars that dont show up can be from companys such as enterprise who self indemnify, that way their salvage cars are worth more money as theyre not on "the list" i deal with salvage for a living but always make a point of informing potential buyers what is what, that way they know what theyre getting into.

only cat c cars carry the note on the bottom of the front page of the logbook to say it has been repaired and that is only a recent thing anyhow

a friend of mine bought a golf which should have been a cat d but was later told it was cat d and this is not uncomen and it can get worse, another friend bought a cat c vw caravelle and was later informed (after repairing it) that it was a cat b or break only vehicle 8O

bottom line is cat c or d makes no difference(as i think daz will concur) you can buy a cheap car with minor damage that will be a cat c but an anhialated car can be cat d cause its worth more.

the best you can do is hpi it and rely on the honesty of the seller

just bear in mind that a vehicle can have a substantial repair and not show up on any check if the car was repaired by the insurance company, over the years i have pieced a lot worse cars back together than i do now as a salvage repairer!!!!!!

Just got the report of my mate.

It clearly states the car is a CAT C, but will this be identified on the LogBook?

looks like it was written off back in 2003 so theres a chance that it may not have been subjected to a vic check and if so the logbook will not show anything :D

Cat C on an E30 written off in 1993 is likely to have been fairly minior damage.
It's most important to know when the car was written off. I wouldn't touch an E30 that was written off when it was less then five years old, bur as an example, a K plate tourer I bought this week on Cat C, had only taken the sump out on a speed hump or similar. No body/suspension damage at all, so no need to shy away from that one.

Is there anyway to confirm that the car may be unrecorded.

I have the logbook for the car in front of me and cannot see anywhere it say's CAT C/D.

When purchasing any car, does the seller need to notify the buyer if the car is a CAT C/D?

i could show you the reason for this and you would wet yourself
mine has a very shallow scrape in rear qtr at the bottommaybe 6 to 7" long and for this it gets a mark against it what a fookin joke

That's exactly what I mean! Cat C/D write offs have nothing whatsoever to do with the amount of damage to a car. Just when in its life it happened.

What if it doesn't say on the V5 form, but it is declared on the HPI report.

That whats happened to my mates car, it has nothing on the V5, but when the got the HPI report, it is declared as a CAT C car. He wasn't a happy bunny.

Can he go back to the seller and ask for his money back, because the seller didn't say it was a CAT C

i think its the buyers responsibilty to check these things mate

i knew all about mine when i bought it
and the damage as said above is minimal very minimal
obviously written off as not a viable repair for an insurance company
in reality it could be fixed in an hour by dentmaster

It certainly won't help, because of the media inspired ridiculous predudice against written off cars.
