I'm building an E30 318iS Turbo, running 8:1 compression. Found the pistons (JE, gapless rings, Ԛ£450 delivered) so I'm looking for somewhere to rebuild the bottom end.
I've been quoted circa Ԛ£600 by a local firm to strip the short block, 1mm overbore, balance the rotating mass, replace all bearings, clean through the channels and crankcase and reassemble using the new pistons.
Does this sound reasonable?

Omi, get them to dip the block and do the machining , but the rest is nuts and bolts mate why pay over the odds ?
BMw bottom ends are balanced anyway, why do it twice unless you plan some lightening work ?

im with ant to some extent, but if its worth the money for peace of mind to you to have it built then thats fair enough. they did want a hell of a lot for the labour though.
again acid bathing etc you can do yourself, but you have to weigh up whether its worth the hassle to you. as far as the balancing is concerned, i think for the price you showed me you might as well, as they can balance it to a closer tolerence than factory and its worth knowing its all good. make sure you get them to do the clutch pressure plate, flywheel too.
