hi guys am not sure wots wrong with my 320i E30 at times it struggles to start and when it does start theres alot of petrol fumes smell...

i woz driveing back from manchester and was doing about 85-90 mph and suddenly car died out on me as if i had turned the ignition off, i pulled over on the hard shoulder restarted it just going to pull off and the car cut out again.
after afew mintues i tried again and it was normal as if there wasnt any problems with the car but ive relised the car tends to cut out when the revs are near to 4 half thousand revs..

am not sure if its a common fault my uncles car did the same on the motor way he also has an E30 320i, any clues to what it might be guys because its gets me into doulbe minds to take the car on motorway journeys..

thanxs hope you guys can help me :D

mmmm, the petrol smell seems like you are flooding the engine because u are trying to start it, as for the cutting out..could be the ecu..im not very technically minded... just a guess, i will ask my friend who works at lind bmw(who services my 320) and see if he has any ideas, its good to see another 320 owner! i love em!

Had a none start problem with a 320i once after it had been running with no bother. After the usual checks found out it was oiled up plugs. New plugs sorted the none start but I sold the car before I found out what was causing the oiling.

The cutting out on the motorway could be the fuel pump.

My mates old jag used to do it, after a while the pump got warm and siezed up then when it cooled down would work again no problem

it might be a leak in the vacuum hoses, like the big hose from the airflow meter it could get a crack that would open sometimes and sometimes stays closed, that's a no start situation and you could flood the engine trying to start it. worth checking

Sounds more like a fuel filter full of dirt to me.
