Basically, there's a cross shaped insert in the main beam lamp, and the silver reflector in the dipped beam thatr you can see when you look into the light is painted black.
If you do a search in the tech section for smoked hellas, you should find the original thread.

I think its more like gun metal grey not black.

When i had simons lights they looked grey not black.
Maybe not Audi Gun metal grey but its a dark shade of grey.

I made mine and painted em black. if you all keep buggin E30adam he may post the tech article i sent him. otherwise PM me and i will email you a copy (give your private email as its around 650k with pictures) these below are the finished articles. for the cross i used 2mm galvonised steel sheet you caould also use aluminium sheet, cut em with tin snips and painted em black. the little circles are angel eyes. and these are smoked bosh witha hella thrown in when i broke a lens. the article covers all.
