A friend of mine has a Baur, excellent condition and has had it 20plus years.

He has wanted a coupe for a long time, but a. cannot find a good one for the right price and b. would be gutted to let his Baur go, as he has had it so long and is obvs attached.

He wants to know that as the Baur (he believes) was created from a coupe, would it be possible to convert it back?

If so, what parts would it take and does anyone know roughly the process?

You just dont know until you ask, I guess...

Any feedback welcome.

Thanks

Firstly anything is possible given time and money, and yes the Baur started off as a 2-door saloon (not coupe winkeye )

Secondly just buying parts will be prohibitive in price especially as most are NLA and the only realistic way is buy a donor with all the bits you need with a rusted out floor or front end smash or a large (1/3 of a car) cut from a breaker.

Then it will be a laborious process of separating spot welds and working where you can plumb your cut in. The rear quarters will need joining as they are one piece all the way up to the oem braze join under the gutter. Not a problem for a good bodyshop but would need doing carefully.

I still think you could get a good one for similar money if you are needing to pay someone to do the work especially as prices have come down a bit recently but if he is attached to his car, it rarely makes financial sense (ask me how I know :D )
