318is Hydraulic Power Steering Pump.

Evening all, just wondering if anyone has got any advice or experience of the replacement of the Hydraulic power steering pump on an E30 318is ?

I recently noticed a high pitched squealing noise on initial start up when turning the steering wheel , I have changed the PAS belt but the noise is still noticeable, so it sounds that it could be the pump ?

It looks like replacement pumps are still readily available so hopefully it won’t become too much of a trauma..

Any advice much appreciated.

I had a nightmare with afternarket PAS pumps recently and stuck to a good used OEM ZF one and the problems stopped. The pumps don't normally squeal though, if you go on full lock left and right with the engine running they normally make a bit of a wuring sound which is normal. The new belt is tight isn't it? The adjuster is a knob head and they often lose the teeth in the most commonly used area so its easy for the belt to slacken,
