E30 brothers & sisters,

I’ve never been impressed with the visibility & performance of the taillights – especially brake lights and the indicators in daylight.

LEDs sound appealing, but we have the Check Control panel to deal with, plus the ‘fast flash’ issues with indicators.
Plus, I would have to navigate the large amount of cheap junk LED globes out there.
Researching options, such as upgraded globes like the Phillips Vision Plus had mixed reviews around faster illumination time but shorter life.

Ended coming across some recommendations from Daniel Stern Lighting.
Those following my build thread might recall I used Daniel Stern’s setup for aiming the E30 headlights for RHD.
The results were impressive, so the guy knows his stuff.

Daniel mentioned about swapping out the regular P21W (BA15s) globe used in our tail lights for a particular globe from a specific manufacturer.
It was a 3497 globe manufactured by the Japanese company Stanley
Specifically, a Honda OE part number 34903-SF-A01 – as Daniel mentioned that many other 3497 globes are junk.
The Stanley Honda globe suits the BA15s housing, but has 45 candle power compared to the P21W’s 32 candle power – sounds promising right?

Well, managed to track them down and on first inspection they look pretty good.

But the 3497 filament has a tighter winding and more of it

I’m no lighting expert, so will need to install half a set and take some comparison photos at dusk.

i know when i upgraded my rear lights/brake lights & indicators a good few years ago i used some LED bubs i found on ebay, never had a problem with the "check" panel or the fast flash,

i would share the link but it has been that long i doubt i could find it again, though there are plenty on ebay that work without a problem.
if it's got t*ts or wheels it's bound to be trouble...............prove me wrong.

Were they 'canbus' friendly? Haven't tried them myself but would have thought something like Cree canbus ones would have the correct resistor to fool the check control and flasher unit.

Popped the globe in the LH turn signal light.
Can't really tell from the video when looking directly at the light, but it throws a lot more light - can see it on the concrete floor compared to the RH light.

If that doesn't work - try this flickr direct link http://flic.kr/p/2oj16Vo

Yep these are incandescent globes, but with a higher luminous intensity (candle power or candela).
Same bayonet fitting and very similar position within the light reflector housing - which gives a very similar directional output as originally designed/intended.
As some LED globes have have the light source emitting in one or a few directions.

They came from Japan, so the price may vary depending on currency/shipping.
Best to PM me for details.

Yeah, that's what I was concerned about - going through trial & error to see what what works and doesn't.

Added them into the front indicators.
Photos so you can see how they 'fit'.

Sure do - but only when the orange lenses are re-attached 😂
