Need technical Q/A then you're in the right place

Hi guys,
I have no rpm counter and no mpg meter. This has been an ongoing issue for a while which has driven me absolutely nuts . Work thrn don't work. Work then don't bloody work

They stopped working so I ordered like for like batteries and had them replaced.
Clocks all worked fine. Then they acted erratic, rev counter needle jumpy etc until it refused to work..

Took the cluster back out and stripped them down and found on one of the batteries the terminals had come loose from the board !
So I had the guy re do it for me, test fitted and all was working.

Now I've Goe out to the car today and yet again the rev counter and mpg meter isn't working :cens:

Temp guage is working fine and stable. Fuel guage is working fine and stable. All other lights work OK. But I've noticed the green si lights stay illuminated even with engine off which I cannot remember if this is supposed to be a thing ??

Yet again checked fuse 21 and 10. No issue with them.

Has he done the batteries properly ? Or suspect cracked solder om the board ?

This is driving me mad now

It is a nuisance when it isn't working. The only issue I ever had as regards the rev counter and meter was when the s.i batteries died and this did not effect the fuel gauge or temp gauge. As the batteries are rechargeable, they should obviously be replaced with the same type as were in there. The green s.i lights should go off with the ignition off.

Yes my lights are now staying on with key out so something not right.
I'll remove the cluster and have him re do the batteries I think.

Just a note from Brian Moore which may be of use to students on the workings of the circuitry,
There is no electronic circuitry on the econo/tacho instrument itself. It is simply two independent analogue meters built into the same case.
The econometer does not use any signal from the tachometer circuitry. It uses the fuel rate signal which comes from the engine ECU on a white/black wire that changes to yellow/white at the cluster, and a road speed signal that comes from the electronics on the speedometer circuit board.
The one case I have had of a non functioning econometer on an otherwise fully working car was found to have an obviously damaged (burnt) component on the speedometer board and another damaged component on the SI board. I didn't know which board had caused the damage to the other, so I took the easy route and changed the whole cluster.
