Has been a while since I posted an update! Don't worry, still love the E30, just life has got in the way of doing much work on it...

Thankfully things have calmed down a bit now so I decided to finally try and fix the clunking noise from the rear - it always seemed to be worst when the car was cold and when it was downshifting in the lower gears, coming to a stop at traffic lights etc.

I was focussing on the rear diff and planned to change the diff bushing and check all the mounting bolts etc while under there. However I also looked further forward at the flex disc, CSB and trans mounts. Low and behold the trans mounts looked very sad... not completely failed but they had definitely collapsed a bit. So I changed them along with the diff bushing.

The diff bushing was simple enough, there are plenty of guides online (can send links if anyone needs)... hardest bit was cutting the old bushing out using a hacksaw blade. Took a good hour of blood, sweat and tears!

But after that the new Polyflex Heritage bushing slipped in with no problems...

The diff itself looked very healthy, so I fitted a new gasket (with a thin layer of RTV sealant) and sealed it all back up again with a bottle of Redline 75w-140 gear oil and new sump plugs.

Then onto the transmission mounts - again this is a pretty straightforward job however access to the mounts (especially the top bolts) is super awkward as the exhaust and heat shield get in the way. After a while I undid all the botls to the heat shield and was able to slide it back just enough to get access.

I had to use 3 or 4 different spanners to find one that fit just right, a load of WD-40 to loosen everything up a bit and have bruised my palms trying to get enough force to break the bolts free. However, eventually they came off...

As you can see there is about a 5mm difference between the old and new mounts, not loads but perhaps enough to put my drivetrain out of line and cause a clunk.

I had removed the mounting bracket (as advised) as well so refitted, aligned and torqued everything back up with new hardware. After that I finally took the car of the stands, had one final check and then took it for an easy drive to the shops... and NO CLUNK!

Such a satisfying end to a couple days of hard but enjoyable work. Here she is sitting pretty in the warehouse...

Good work. These are a couple of the many jobs I need to do on mine when I get some time so good to see some pictures. Glad it fixed your clunk.

Nice car and nice progress mate! :thumb:
Nothing better than a little list of things to do on the E30 and when done, make a world of difference to the drive!

It's been exactly a year since I owned this car - so thought it would be interesting to list every job I've done on it so far. I like keeping a record of each job and could be useful for anyone out there considering buying an E30 and wondering what the workload might be like!

I should point out that the few garages I've taken this car to have said it's in great condition, so this list could easily be longer on a different vehicle. However I wouldn't want this to put anyone off, learning my way around the E30 over the last 12 months has been hugely rewarding. It's one of the best decisions I ever made and I can't imagine living without it now... driving it is a joy and working on it is even more enjoyable...

Work so far...
Engine Oil and filter
Ignition service (plugs, cap & rotor)
Throttle boot replaced
Trans and diff. oil (By garage)
New Fog bulb
Ignition leads
Air filter
New ECU Motronic 1.3 & Mild chip install
4 x Ronal ls alloys & Falken tyres
Wheel alignment (By garage)
Replaced broken front ashtray surround
Euro number plate surround and pressed plates
Timing belt, aux belts, coolant flush (By garage)
Rear subframe and front control arm bushing replacement (By garage)
Accelerator pedal bushing replaced
HVAC bulbs replaced
Engine Oil & Filter change (second time!)
New fuel filter & hoses
Fuel injector refurb from Injectortune
New fuel hoses and vacuum hose
Cleaned throttle position switch (TPS) and Idle Control Valve (ICV)
New Breather hose fitted
New Odometer gears fitted
New Bosch Fuel pump and O-ring
Replace Diff bushing and diff. oil
Replace transmission mounts
Replace Exhaust hanger

At this stage the car is running pretty sweet however there are two more big-ish jobs on the horizon... replacing the rear shocks which are leaking and then I'm saving up for a custom stainless steel exhaust to be fitted early next year.

I think at that point I might just enjoy it for the summer and stop working on it but I'm sure more jobs will pop up!

Haven't posted anything on here for a while - not because I've fallen out of love with the car, far from it, just been out there using it. Not much work done other than some small bits and pieces - o2, coolant and washer level sensors replaced plus a full oil and filter service :D

Was at the Oh So Retro! meet at Manston Airport yesterday and will be at the big show in September if anyone else is attending?

A friend got this great photo of the car down in the Faversham Quay the other day...
