Evening all, just wondering now that most of us are filling the car up with super unleaded only, is there a chip available that could optimise for this? Would it be possible even, to create a map that would take advantage of the extra octane?

I reached out to Mark D Sylva, who's the real OG as far as chips are concerned and he does a high octane chip. However he only has chips for cat cars as it's customary in north America. It'd love to hear if there's anyone making these on this side of the pond.

Use a coffee grinder or blender to get it down to a fine grind, then just pour straight in. I can't imagine it'd make the performance any worse winkeye

There's little if any gain to be made, since the engine is designed to run on standard unleaded, and won't give any noticeable gains on super unleaded.

The only advantage of using super (E5) is less chance of potential corrosion of the fuel system compared to the new-fangled E10 stuff.

Thanks Speedtouch, was hoping you could share some expertise. So it wouldnt really be possible to design a map that would suit the higher octane? I suppose the only things happening are fuel, air and ignition, obviously the air and ignition cant be adjusted? They are set values, but could the fuelling be tweaked slightly, maybe even for a slight increase in mpg? Also, would some more modern spark plugs be of any benefit?

With these things it helps to realise that 'octane' is "resistance to detonation" It is not the fuel that gives the power, the higher octane just allows changes to the engine that would result in detonation (compression, boost, spark advance etc).

Modern cars can make changes to the engine itself using the software that can use the protection of higher octane fuels to increase power or economy. Unfortunately engines of the M20 age don't work like that (no knock sensors etc) and you have to work more on first principles.

You would have to change something physically in the engine like skim the head to increase the compression using the ability of the 99ron to protect the engine. The 2.8 engine build page helps to explain a bit on the use of super unleaded

My turbo-petrol daily has over 50 bhp difference between what it achieves on 95 ron vs 99 ron but sadly the M20 is not going to do the same without some cutting of metal and once done it won't like going back.

Thankyou mate that's a perfect explanation, will give that page a read now

Couldn't you advance the ignition a bit?

I used to do that when I ran the 323 on 4-star , didn't seem to make much difference to a Jetronic B23 but then again nothing much did to that engine, (including all the efforts of Buchloe) :? . Dizzy was easier to grip and twist though :D
