Replacing windows
Moderator: martauto
Thinkin bout buying some windows that have been professionaly tinted.
How hard is it to take out and replace the windows of a 2dr e30?
The fronts are electric and the rears aren't the type that fold out. They dont move at all.
What to do? How much do you reckon it would cost to get a profesional to replace them for me?
Cheers!

Window glass is easy enough to change.NIX wrote:Thinkin bout buying some windows that have been professionaly tinted.

Remove door cards, the window lift mechanisms and the rubber seals at the top of the door bottoms and the glass will lift out.
Thanks mate!
Thought I could rely on the resident hero to reply.
Is this pretty much the same principle for the rear windows? How bout the actual rear screen?
Do you know if there are any legal limits on tint levels for the rear or does that just apply to the front windows?
Cheers!!

Just about the same procedure for the rears, IIRC.NIX wrote:Thanks mate!

Shouldn't thimk there's any legal restriction on tint levels of rear and rear side windows, as there's no requirement to actually have windows there.(As long as you have two external mirrors).
How bout the actual rear screen tho? Would it be worth getting a pro to do it? Any idea of cost?
Obviously I've never done this before but if I set aside some time how long do you think it would take to do the whole lot (not inc front screen obviously) and what tools would I need.
Really appreciate the info mate. Sorry to keep askin questions!

You don't have to have a rear window - vans often don't.
Rear window is removed by pulling out the locking strip, unplugging the demister terminals and pushing the screen out. Somebody lying in the back with their feet on the inside of the screen and pushing is the usual way, with someone outside to catch it.
Putting it back can be done by a loop of string pulling the rubber over the screen frame, or by working your way around with a couple of screwdrivers, using plenty of lubricant.
Hardest bit is putting the locking strip back in. There's a special tool you can by for about Ԛ£10 that makes it easy.
No idea on cost.

Again thanks! to you both.
Just need to see about gettin a set now, there's a guy on the sales forum sellin a set. Most importantly however is gettin some cash together. There's so many things I need/want to get for the car. Tinted windows was more of an after thought triggered by the guy seling his set.
How much would a set of new seals cost? Buy new from stealers I take it?
Cheers!

Thanks dude!
Hmmm, still tempted to do it myself but might find out how much it will cost to get a pro to fit. Dont particularly want to risk f@cking up the seals especially if they're new along with the windows themselves plus the drivers side window has been scraping against something when going up and down, has caused a patch of scratches to the glass so would get that checked out too, although it might just be some crap stuck down there sqeezing against the glass?

You will definately need a pro to do the rear screen tint. The sides are quite simple. If you like you can call me on 07974 022 779 and i will talk you through it. Bit long winded to do on here.
