Mine is a 316 1987 auto with a weber and it has a manual choke which is really not a problem.
The kickdown works fine but how it does that I dont really know also which type it is either.
It is a massive improvement and well worth doing.

Thanks, I have been doing some research and they all point to it being a manual choke, so I guess that's the way ahead

It really is worth it, second hand (if you can find one) or even new 8O

I have a similar car also made at the end of 1987 and registered in 1988 from new. To date I have had 3 instances of issues related with carb. First was when the car was quite new and the Pierberg carb was replaced under warranty. Second was in mid nineties and the dealer replaced the insulating rubber gasket between the carb and the manifold. Third instance was around 2005/6. This time the dealer could not fix the problem. It took me some two years to fix the problem. At the time you could get parts for the Pierberg carb from dealer. I am not sure if you can still get parts for it now. I replaced the carb with a second hand carb( same type) but the problem was still there.

I carefully checked the carb replacing parts and looking for moving parts where there was any wear. It was better but not perfect and with an automatic its a nightmare to drive in traffic. I even reasoned that ecu, yes even with carb it has got an ecu to control the carb, might need to be reset by disconnecting the battery and reconnecting after a while but it still did not work.

I keep my car in a garage so before going to work I used to take it out let it warm up for a about 30 seconds and then go inside. When you used the car afterwards it ran perfectly. I did this for about 2 months and one day I did not have the time to warm it up but drove straight off.

To my surprise it drove perfectly. Ever since it has been fine and that has been some 15 years or so.

As your car is an auto what you need to be careful is that when it plays up your natural instinct is to rev the engine to see if it makes it better. Don't. This destroys ZF transmission as I found to my cost, which I had to have it rebuilt. I even thought about converting it to fuel injection as in M10 318i since it is basically a same engine with the different top end.
