My 323i (1984) runs great, but when the revs get to 4,000 rpm it starts to choke. Any suggestions about what is up?

Welcome to the world of Jetronic
My guess is it will be in the rats-nest of vacuum hoses, especially around the vacuum advance on the distributer. Sounds like you have a blockage on one side or a leak on the other not letting the wonderful Heath Robinson system adjust the timing.
I would also check the distributer is working
Could also be one of a thousand other things but a leaky vac pipe is where my money would be on that engine.
Nice to se another fellow 323i owner having fun, and before the chorus chimes in, any pics of it?

Do I still need to put my pics in photo bucket before posting them?

I had an L-Jet 320i that did this, following a cambelt change (at a Halfords centre
).
After checking the above-mentioned areas, check that the cambelt is OK and properly fitted to give correct timing.
Another item to check, is the rotor arm; they have a centrifugal rev-limitter built in, and if the spring has gone slack, this could be causing it to limit too early. It can be done away with completely, since the ECU in any case has a built-in rev limit of 6,250 rpm.

Interesting about the cam belt change. I did mine a few months back and set everything to TDC. Is the timing meant to be slightly advanced or retarded?
