No oil?? Did you look under the performance lubricants section?

For the plugs, give me the spec/model engine of the car and I will give Denso a shout tomorrow and see what they suggest.

Sorry stupid me, i didnt check cos i couldnt find the plugs so was distracted, anyway my cars a 1989 320i Cab, M20, 6cylinder..

If the engine is still in nice good condistion then you are looking at a top option of a 5w-40 full synthetic, if the car sees track time then look at a 10w-50.

Brand wise, we rate Silkolene and Motul as tops.

Yo Oilman!!!

What would be the best oil for my 325i tourer??

No engine mods as yet, 105k on the clock but I do quite high mileage - can be around 700 miles a week. A lot of it is motorway miles, but also drive it very hard all the time!!!

Thanks for the mail.

As a top quality option we would suggest a good 5w-40 full synthetic for all year round use, go for a good one and they will be happy for 8-10,000 miles, look at Motul, Silkolene, Fuchs and Amsoil.

its just I have bought 5L when doing oil changes on other cars then been slightly short??

Where did you get that price from? we are £39.99 for 5ltr delivered.

You should take around 4.5-4.8ltr so a 5ltr tub should be fine.

Actually - looking again i notice you don't do 1 litre bottles of silkolene.
What 1 litre could i buy for topping up?

Or would it be better to use a different brand altogether and keep to the same one for topping up??

What's the best option/brand considering i like to keep a 1L handy??

1ltr bottles will be available from May onwards, they are manufacturing at the moment.

To top up you can use a good quality 5w-40/0w-40 full synthetic and it will be fine.

Or, go for 6ltr or the Motul 300v 5w-40.

Basically if you go for 'cheap' mineral/petroleum based oil, change it very often, if you want to save fuel and spend less on oil, go for 'expensive' full synthetic. 8O

Could you give me some advice please. It is all a bit confusing really with oils. I can get Fuchs oil (here in Australia) for wholesale price, but they dont do a full synthetic in the viscosity range for my engine. I have a 3.5l M30 (E34 engine going into my E30. They have a 0-20 and a 5-50 in the synthetics, but I have heard that anything less than 10 makes the M30 too noisy. Their recommended oil is the Titan GT Plus which is only a mineral oil. Do you really need to run a full synthetic to get the best performance and protection. Also the gearbox is the ATF oil type. A Dextron II type is recommended, is there any point in running a higher spec Dextron type III full synthetic in the box. A point a lot of guys would be interested in I am sure - is there any point/advantage in running a newer type/higher spec oil in gearboxes/diffs/power steering than what is recommended in the companies oil recommendations list. Also something else I have found out that others may be interested in is that Fuchs TITAN Gear HLS 75/90 is the oil to use in BMW diffs open or limited slip- this oil was specifically designed for BMW diffs. It took me a long time to find an oil that was recommended for BMW LS diffs- all oil companies in there recommendation says - 'refer to dealer'. Firstly I've always recommended Fuchs oils for stock BMW's because of their factory fill position and knowledge of BMW's

Dexron III is backwardly compatible and better. Fuchs Titan ATF 4000 is the one for Dex III and Dex II is Fuchs Titan ATF 3000.

Their gear oil in Europe is known as Fuchs Titan Gear Syn 75w-90

Engine wise the ones to seek out certainly here are:

Fixed service Fuchs Titan Supersyn SL 5w-40 (LL98)
Variable Fuchs Titan Supersyn SL 0w-30 (LL01)

There is also the new top of the range LL04 oil Fuchs Titan GT1 5w-30

For the 318is we recomend as a top quality option a 5w-40 full synthetic all year round use, you can use a 10w-40 semi synthetic as a cost option.

For quality have a look at Motul, Silkolene and Fuchs.

hi there,

what about 5 -50 grade full synthetic? I can't seem to find 15-50 over here (canada).. i know bmw recommends 5-40 is there a disadvantage to going to 50. i'm getting the sense people are throwing out the term too thin which scares me of course...

Do you have any suggestions on excepted oil change intervals?

I'm running a chipped m20 with cold air intake, cam, etc, and running the engine fairly hard. it's got 200k on it, but the head's been done

Stick with 5w-40, it's more shear stable due to the narrower viscosity gap.

Can i use Motul 300V 15w-50 motorcycle oil in E30 325 (M20) that will be used for fast road and drifting ?

It says on the bottle that oil contains some additives for better transmission protection. Will these do any harm to car engine ?

You can use it no problem :cool:

Bike oils have an additive to prevent wet clutch slip, so.... you can use a bike oil in a car but not a car oil in a biike as the clutch will slip.

Hi,

I've got a dec 1989 built 318i 4dr sedan with M40 engine.
I've been told to use castrol magnatec 10W-40 (semi-synthetic). I also have on hand some Repsol elite competition 5W-40 full synthetic at home. Which one should I use? Personally I think I should go for the Repsol but am interested to see what others recommend. My car has almost 170,000km and I've had the the head fully recondition (snapped timming belt :cry: ). Other than that runs very nicely.
