My 35w HID kit arrived this weekend, was a bit put out when the side lights caused the HIDs to strobe but found the answer on here - disconnect the dim dip resistor. Fab, thank you E30 zone.

Was just out checking the alignment and noticed when I turn the side lights on it causes the check panel to light up the dipped beam bulb check light. If I'm quick enough and pull the headlight stalk to dipped beams it's fine and no warning, just appears when side lights are selected (have to turn engine off to reset once on). I believe that I have correctly disconnected the resistor but attached a pic to make sure. Anyone got suggestions about what to check?

I always get the light on the CC panel when I turn my HIDs off. No idea what's causing it but I've read of all sorts of quirks with HIDs and the CC, at the end of the day these lights are not strictly compatible with E30s and that probably contributes to them being illegal on our cars, which is madness in my opinion as they're a positive safety upgrade. I always stick the halogens in for the MOT and then revert straight back to the HID kit.

Yeah the whole reason I bought the kit was so I could actually see where I'm going in the dark, I love car but refused to use it if I knew I would be out late. A light on the CC panel is a minor sacrifice.

The old switcheroo at MOT time is great idea, the last MOT they failed my car on emissions due to not understanding there is a different test for pre cat cars, I think HIDs would send them spiralling

But the old fashioned bulbs with the "yellow" light are so cool seeing them come towards you! Really stands out as everyone has leds nowadays. Also everyone's LEDs are too bright... You're joining the club. But I guess if you can't beat them, join them!

There's nothing cool about not being able to see 2 metres in front of you when night driving! HIDs are a big upgrade on halogens but still not good enough in my opinion and nowhere near as bright as the modern stuff.

True, the distance isn't great... But that's what the full beams are for :)

Interesting, the kit I installed was a 35w kit wonder if that makes any difference in terms of CC checks

I can’t say I remember exactly how the CC works but I would guess a resistor to make the HID setup match the OEM lights from the CC point of view. Bit like the ballast resisters used on LED bulbs to make them canbus-friendly on modern cars

Thankfully the dim-dip system was only fitted to a few years’ worth of cars. Daft idea really

I have to admit I do like the old, slightly yellower lights, it reminds me of all the magazine covers back in the day with the BMWs and 6 lights on. To me it shouts 80s more than anything else.

I drove for nearly 10 years on the early H1 lights and didn’t think anything of it, but a set of smileys did find its way onto the chromie in the last couple of years. I may think differently now I have got used to matrix LEDs

I have a set of original Hellas to go back on but it probably won’t be out at night much. You can still get good brighter bulbs in lower colour temperature though.

For the FL I will probably look at using one of the off the shelf (admittedly silly money) E-marked self-contained units that a lot of the ‘restomodders’ use. Things will probably have moved on again when I get round to it.

You can of course get nicked for driving HIDs in an E30, if plod can be arsed...or if you're found to have them fitted after a prang...probably nulls your insurance.

The German Bill are pretty hot on this matter and although I ran HIDs for years and swapped for mot I've given them up, they were good though!

Biggest improvement for daily driving for me was to run Depo cheapies with Osram Nightbreaker extreme which are really good, my tests with Leds proved to be poor and overpriced ( see the HID thread )

I installed H1 Twenty20 Daylights but I couldn't tell a difference from the generic h1s in there already... I will admit that I'm thinking about removing them, I don't want any insurance headache especially when it has agreed valuation on it

Ok so just tested out the old bulbs and they seem really bright... I have a suspicion that something was going wrong with the power to my headlights previously. The dipped never used to come on when I selected sidelights, only the small bulbs on the top of the headlights. I think messing around with the dim dip resistors has done something for the better, but I coudk t possibly say

Oops. Link corrected. I’d have preferred 4300 colour bulbs but 5500 isn’t too bad and certainly has no blue tint. I believe they have both projector and non projector versions, I chose the projector version because I have the smilies.

I was not aware of non projector types, do you know the difference ?

I don’t explicitly but I assume that the bulb may have an additional cover on top as seen in some LED variants to minimise light scatter when in a non projector housing.
