Sticky Steering 1990 320i cab

Hi All, my 1990 320i cab suffers from steering that sticks from time to time at low speeds. It kind of groans before then freeing up.
It does have power steering and I have changed the pump and belt so far, but no improvement, the old fluid did have some filings in it.
I guess next is the rack, I am not planning to go purple rack as I want to keep the car BOGO standard.
Anyone else experienced this?
Any input welcome.

If I was changing the rack I would go for a purple tag while you are at it.

Thanks Ben, I looked into this but decided to keep the car standard.

I am getting a reconditioned pump and rack, hopefully that will cure it!

Make sure you get a realistic warranty, many of the recon racks fail not long after fitting, either because the system isnt flushed out properly (fit a new reservoir while your there) or because they are re built with cheap sh*te seals
