In my quest to track down and eliminate rust in the driver’s side footwell on my recently purchased E30, a rain storm has revealed that my car loves to dump water all over the footwell area. Can we get a thread going of common areas for water leaks?
So far I have the following to check:
Elephant trunk(s) in the engine compartment
Drains under vent panels below windshield
Sunroof drains (my A-pillar is visibly wet) Tweakbox Appvalley https://vlc.onl
Harness grommet in firewall
HVAC blower seal
HVAC box drain
Does anyone have anything to add to this list, or have any stories about their troubleshooting or resolution of these leaks?
The leaks seem to be traveling along some of the wiring under the steering wheel and dripping pretty close to the driver’s seat.
Great little community we have here. Thanks for the help in advance, friends.

If you have the time and inclination remove the interior . although a bit daunting if you haven't before imo its worth it. and more than doable .ZhakirSetie wrote: ↑Fri Jul 02, 2021 6:44 amIn my quest to track down and eliminate rust in the driver’s side footwell on my recently purchased E30, a rain storm has revealed that my car loves to dump water all over the footwell area. a, you can establish the condition of the floor ,treat / repair before the rot gets a hold.
b. If the carpet is wet then expect a few days to dry it out properly due to the sound deadning foam which is in abundance and can hold a lot of water.
c. Dry out the floor, and sprinkle talcum powder in the areas where you believe the water to be entering the cabin
this should give you a better idea where its entering
d, Check the drain holes are clear at the bottom of the doors
e. I spent £500 on just replacing the two door frame seals (OEM) so it can be expensive , second hand will now be of a considerable age to use as replacement but could be better than you already have fitted
