Quick side project whilst waiting for parts.

Don't like depo things, it's an easy way out.. Found some replacement glass lenses on ebay and got to work!

The colour is the bmw motorsport engine colour from the procar era, it's what i am using on the s38!

I think they are still available as part of a wheel bearing kit on Autodoc. https://www.autodoc.co.uk/sidat/9775007

A few single ones on Ebay but abroad.

edit some here maybe https://bmw.click/product/z1-cap-3-3121 ... 3AQAvD_BwE

Another long break for me, from everything car related..

Started back up in December, with finally making my welding trolley i've been nagging myself to make for the past year.
Made out of off-cuts of whatever I had left from previous fab projects.

Image

Image

With that out the way, it gave me chance to enjoy fabrication again. So I looked to finish off my roll-over jig.

Image

Image

Image

Got the rear up in the air to remove the subframe, diff, fuel tank and everything else that went with them

Image

Next was to test fit..

Now some may notice there's an issue here, the car actually touches the ceiling when at the height needed for the roll over jig.

Image

Image

Image

And I still have another 35mm to add for the castor wheel clearance..

Luckily for me, once the car is spun upside down, I will gain around 300mm ceiling clearance! (hopefully)
This does mean the car will need to be spun around often, but that's why I made it as robust as possible.

With both ends on, I got the measurements from underneath and made the bracing parts to hold the two frames together to aid with rigidity when I am rolling the jig in and out of my garage.

I had aimed to get the car upside down by the end of the year, I had it all ready to do on NYE but just ran out of time in the end.

I took the opportunity to clean out the garage

Image

Image

Image

I'll try again next year

Image

(not something I should of done on my own)

Image

And here is what I need to tackle

Image

Doesn't fit, but i knew this

Image

And this is how it sits in the garage

Now to work on removing the underseal
Here is the equipment i'll be using to do so

Image

A quick patch test

Image

After the multi tool

Image

After the wire wheel in grinder

Image

I'm very happy with this work process as it makes little mess and helps keep the work isolated.

First day with the underseal removal

Image

Not a bad attempt, now to rust convert, epoxy primer the good areas and weld through primer the areas that need work.

looks to be coming along nicely.

if i had the room/space i'd be building my own rollover jig but no where to store it.

keep the updates coming.
if it's got t*ts or wheels it's bound to be trouble...............prove me wrong.

I made the jig for that reason of not having the space, mainly to no room to work on the car in the garage. Now i can roll it out and have much more room!
The jig is actually 'flat pack' too so when assembled it'll store ok. Well I'll actually just sell as it as I hope it won't be needed again!

Also Steve, would you be able to move this thread to the 'E30 Builds / Restorations' forum, as it's been bugging me for ages that it is in the wrong one, thanks if so

Cheers Steve. I really don't know at this point. I'm aiming to have the car body done by the end of the year, where I can just start bolting bits on.

I've purchased pretty much all big priced components now, but this engine is a serious money pit where even the small bits add up in no time!

I’ve been solo-working on it straight after work this week til 5pm ish to finish before the neighbours get home. (Will show progress soon)

with the small rust areas converted, I could start with the primer! I'm using brush on epoxy primer on the good bits (cream) and weld primer on the bits that will require work (silver).

Image

Image

Image

Then moving swiftly on to the rest of the car!

Image

A couple hours later

Image

And the next evening

Image

Image

Unfortunately due to the noise, I can only work until my neighbours get home from work which gives me a couple hours each night, weather dependent!

Image

This is the finish I achieve using the multi tool, it really helps to keep the mess to a minimum and does seem to help speed up the process.

I'll be wire wheeling this area over the next couple days, get it painted and move up!

Finally had the weather improve..

Image

May of get excited with the rust convertor here

Image

Image

Leave for a day, then wire wheel off. Weld primer the very bad bits, epoxy primer the good bits

Image

Image

Onto the other side

(it looks blue because its reflecting my neighbours blue van next to it..)
Image

Image

Very happy with the condition of my sills, this part of the car was all in pretty good condition, the rear will be the real hard part.

Never knew there were threaded blind holes here, I've thought about making an adapter to screw into here and use as a jacking point, please tell me if that is a bad idea.

Be careful with too much rust converter it may reduce the paint adhesion

Be careful with too much rust converter it may reduce the paint adhesion
Yeh you’re not wrong! That’s why i wire brush it off once converted! The epoxy primer then seals it up
Good idea, wire brush will polish it tho so a good 40 grit scuff after ;) Should be fine though
