Hey Guys,
Trying to desperately get my fuel system back up into the car and failing at the first hurdle - the new fuel pump with assembly I bought off ebay seems to be too long - ie it bottoms out against the bottom of the tank and doesnt sit flush against the top of the tank so can't screw it on. I thought all the assembly systems for the fuel pump were the same? The one I got off ebay is:
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/402460483732
When I type that part number into RealOEM it comes up with:
16141180109
Suction device w.pump
From:02/24/1988To:03/19/1990Weight:0.001 kgPrice:
Superseded by:
16141180233(01/31/1990 — ), Exchangeable retrospectively
The specified part was not found.
On realoem there are a few different part numbers for my car year and model (1988 318i UK manual):
10 Suction device w.pump 1 03/1988 16141181075 $379.75 ENDED, SI 160287646
10 Suction device w.pump 1 03/1988 16141180233 $402.64
For vehicles with
National version Australia
and
Saudi Arabia version
L810A=Yes
=Yes
10 Suction device with pre-supply pump 1 09/1983 16141179415 $309.13 SI 160287646
Anyone else experienced this before or am I just not installing it correctly?
Thanks!
Seenan
Fuel Pump wont fit

I can't pull the eBay link but the one I had I think was 16141179711
They do have a bit of a knack to fitting - the filter sock on the end will interfere with the baffle thing (I may have the wrong term here) unless it's positioned correctly. But being too long doesn't sound right

Thanks JungleGus, the “baffle” u mention looks like a metal bowl inside the tank? The only reason i say it’s too long is when I push it in straight then sock thing bottoms out against the baffle bowl thing. Tried to angle it a bit but just not sure if there were different lengths?

Looks like the right part They are all the same length. As Gus says, bit of a knack, have to rotate the pump as you put it in.
Or. Has the bottom of the fuel tank been pushed up slightly by someone jacking the car in the wrong place?

How does the length of the new assembly compare with the old?
If it differs, then the new one has been made incorrectly. There's no variation in length.
