Question for the group here - I am pondering getting an E30 and building it up to be an enduro rally type car (think Peking to Paris) for ultra long distance, semi off-road type travel. Not worried about speed, focused on keeping it light and reliable.
My current thinking is that a pre-FL 318i with the M10 may be the way forward, but potentially a 318iS may be a better base?
Or - are there far better car suggestions out there? An early 911 appeals, but $$
Open to any and all suggestions!
Cheers,
Gus

My dads neighbour is an organiser for the Peking to Paris. Would certainly be an awesome awesome thing to do. The 'newest' car you can enter is 1975:
A - Pioneer - up to Dec 1920
B - Vintage - Jan 1921 to Dec 1930
C - Vintageant - Jan 1931 to Dec 1947
D - Classic - Jan 1948 to Dec 1975
(or up to Dec 1985 if relevant and as advised in the specific Event Regulations)
E - Special - any car not eligible in its normal age Category due non-period modifications or a later
build date.
I decided to call them and they do accept cars up 1985 so an early E30 would be fine. At least with an E30 you'll have plenty of space for spares, luggage, tools. You can fit a roof rack etc.
Do you want a co-driver?

Surely, a 325iX would be the best base to start with, for such a trek? Available from 1982-1990.

Singer would be the dream! Only around £600K off the mark...
Well, amongst the fleet of turds I have a Series 2a Landy 2 1/4 Petrol, older than me
Always thought about going full restomod on it to make it drive well and take it across a continent or two.
Got a V8 from a P5 from same era sitting underneath it that I though might be a candidate to replace the 2 1/4

Go for it! But beware, the P5 engine, although higher compression and more powerful than the Landie's Rover V8, was designed to run on 4/5-star leaded fuel, so you may well need to at least adjust the ignition timing to get it to run on modern fuel...
