I use Shell helix ultra 5w 40 in all my cars and buying the 20ltr drum is way cheaper. Just a bit of a hit at the time of buying.

Cheers for that, I was sure I used it on my old 330 sport a few years ago.
7 litres is nearly £45 plus, so 20 litres for £74 makes alot of sense to me.

It would take me possibly 4 years to use up the 20 litres-is oil still good to use after being on the shelf that long?

I've been using Helix 5W - 40 in my cars for about the last fifteen years or so. Main reason is that there's usually been a promotion on it in E.Leclerc French supermarkets when I've been over there, offering 5 litre cans (already at a good price) bundled with a smaller 2 litre can gratuit, making it an unmissable bargain.

Base oil has been, but some of the additives deteriorate over time, but I wouldn't worry about a couple of years.

I believe a lot of oil is recycled, if I care about a car I use Millers,

Funny enough I was reading an article somewhere recently and it said oil is good for 1 year after it is opened and 5 years if it remains sealed. I ignored that as I don’t necessarily comply with it.

I follow the book - 15W-40 in the winter and 20W-50 in the summer especially as I drive long haul - drivers handbook says sustained over 60mph driving needs next grade up, especially
in the summer when its hot, which is why I use 20W-50 and not 40.

I know modern oils are "better" whatever that means exactly, but I don't like the increased valve train noise with thinner oil - to me it sounds like more noise = more wear.

Only my opinion, so don't shoot me down, I know loads of people disagree, with perfectly valid arguments saying its fine to use 5W-40 or less.

Sorry probably a bit "off topic"

If you were using oil made in the 1980's then it would be right to go by a handbook also written in the 1980s. This was nearly 40 years ago, and the technology of everything, including oil, has moved on a bit!
The cheapest discount supermarket oil available today will have far better lubricating properties than the most sophisticated of oils available when the E30 was designed

I know I know I know...... but I don't like the added engine noise - always makes me feel for the engine - I'm probably just a nutter.

Ambient temp. shouldn't make much difference to the operating temperature of the engine, if the radiators are up to scratch, so I'd still use the same.

a good 10W-50 or 15W-50 if its really hot area. otherwise a 10W-40 will work in "normal"summer.
