I have just heard that the hedgehog resistor on an e46 can drain the battery, dont know if its true, but if it is, could this apply to the e30 ?

No the E46 is a solid state controller and has a permanent feed, the E30 one is a basic resistor only taking supply from the fan switch that is controlled by the ignition.
Battery drains are more commonly ;
Interior lights
Boot light- especially if boot or tailgate wiring loom is damaged at the hinge.
Glovebox light
SI Board in the instrument cluster.
Central locking faults especially if linked with water ingress at front drivers side.
Best way to find it is carry out a battery drain test with an amp meter and disconnect fuses until you see the drain disappear, then you can concentrate your diagnosis on the circuits supplied by that fuse.
