Not really a huge advantage in having them, aside from that they ensure your bonnet doesn't land on your head on a windy day. Downside is that they can explode in an under-bonnet fire!
Don't pay a fortune, get them cheap off a crashed Saxo or 106 and make 'em fit!

Thought all E30's had a gas strut to hold the bonnet open

There's not some confusion between bonnet gas strut and strut brace here, is there?

I'm thinking the original post is asking about the power lift type struts, they're common with the VW fraternity, they open the bonnet un-aided.

Bugger. That explains why the bonnet had a death wish on my head then.

The short original one hold the bonnet down until you start to lift about about 10-12 inches.
You could try the longer ones from a tourer tailgate but would have to fit them in a different position along the sides and would probably get in the way when working on the engine. It would be a good mod seeing as even a new short one doesn't hold the bonnet in a strong wind.
There is NO nucleus.

Think i will be going for a new standard one, changed the battery today in the garage and nearly lost a hand

...... that bonnet suprised me how fast it came down

(daft as i am i spent nearly a minute looking round the wing tops and bonnet underside for a bonnet prop.... 1001 uses for a pry bar #927 temporary bonnet prop)

They do lose their strength gradualy when they fail. I changed the strut on one of mine recently after it came down on me in a moderate breeze.
Steady as a rock in a force 8 now!
