Hi. Started to change the cambelt on my 85 323i. The top part went well, fan etc all removed. I undid the bolts around the vibration damper but cannot get it off. Tried all sorts of tapping and levers etc. Does the crank nut definitely stay in place? I have left it soaking in plus gas.
Hope you can help. Thanks jed

It did on mine, 86 325i.
I presume you’re following the procedure on the Wiki. https://www.e30zone.net/e30wiki/index.p ... elt_Change
If so you will have read about the ‘One piece crankshaft hub’ whereby the crankshaft bolt remains in place,.... but there are ‘two piece crankshaft hubs’, which need the crankshaft bolt removing.
I don’t know to which model or year the two piece is applicable. Guess you could start by putting your VIN number into RealOEM & tracing it that way.

This is the link to the real oem. https://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/showpa ... Id=11_0276
Mine doesn't have a pulley in front that I can see. It looks just like item 1 in the diagram.

The crank bolt looks like this one

Different engine so I don't know if my input is much help at all but I've just done my cambelt today so I thought I'd chime in. In my car (M40B18) the vibration damper was held on with 6 bolts together with a pulley (item 2 in the realoem diagram) which was for the power steering belt iirc. When removing the damper it was surprisingly firm while the pulley basically fell off freely, I've found top to bottom rocking motions help when freeing it when it's stuck, since it seems to get hung up on the locating pin

Good luck with the belt change, can't imagine how much of a ballache it is getting hung up on this.

It's a while since I stripped mine down last but I do not remember having to take the crank bolt out. Nothing I have in my old manuals for the 323 say otherwise either.

They are a pig to get off sometimes if they have not been off in a while, good soaking in plus gas or wd40 helps but a bit of heat with a MAPP torch does wonders.

Last one I took off an M20 I just gave it a gentle tap one side and then the other (lump hammer and a bit of 4x2 to cushion the blow :hammer: ) to break the seal.

I have a couple of crankshafts here that arrived with nothing other than toothed pulley and the crank bolt left firmly seized in place (which is immense fun to get out of a bare crankshaft without breaking it :D ) None of mine have needed the crank bolt taking off.

Ahh well that's reassuring. I will leave it a day or two and keep soaking it. I will try a blow lamp too😁
