Pity you aren't in Grimsby
Can't get decent machinists for love nor money. What's the typical hourly rate around Leeds.?

It`s hard to say as certain parts of west yorkshire (Bradford, Halifax, Huddersfield) may offer decent rates of pay say up to £17/hour but are crap holes to get in and out of and when the weather turns, the M62 is a car park and the side roads as well.
There are very few of us left now, and with little to no training been done over the last 30 years , when Covid is under control, it will be back to square one......WHERE ARE YOU ALL ??
Pushing trollies or polishing bananas.lol
You will always need items to be made so take this as a massive warning.

I hear you, I'm manager of a machine shop coupled to a Foundry so mainly machining castings for Steel works etc. The standard of people has fallen off a cliff in the last 10 years. Pay is £15.5 to £17 here.
I've had a couple of younger lads who could turn out really good but they just don't have the commitment, days or even a week AWOL is perfectly acceptable to them.

I agree with the 10 year bit, they are told they are skilled in months !!!! ??
I have worked with alot of Polish guys who are the hardest workers around and lovely guys to go with it, but the attitude some people had towards them who were supposed to be looking after them was to say the least "Shit" !!
Do you have a branch near Leeds ??

Mart.
We have several Polish workers in the Foundry, to be honest we've found them as varied as anyone else. We have 2 that have been with us 10 years plus and are top workers but we've also had to sack a couple for drinking on the job, think Vodka in the toilet cistern and hidden in their bag

Pleased to hear that Mart.
Machining has to be one of the most underpaid of the engineering trades there is. I'd bet you'll wipe the floor with half the younger lads.

That great news on getting another job and for sticking to your trade. As a motorcycle / ATV technician, I found it impossible over 50 years of age.
Employers preferring to hire youngsters with a laptop who know everything.
Also a lot of firms don't respect experience or skills and seem to think technicians (that's two up from fitter>mechanic>) grow on trees and can be hired for peanuts. I was was told by the boss that if I didn't like working for 10€ an hour he could get two East Europeans for that. Seems he was so wrong as I have been begged to return from retirement at 20€ a hour. But at 75 end of this month, no way, I just about get by on my pensions now so why work when you don't have to? It's not just Leeds (or the North of UK) in general but everywhere.

All comments by me should be taken in the right sprite, Jack Daniels is fine.
