Ok so i dont think i'll be making Lakeside now!

Having bought my cab it needed tax. So when i signed my bit on the V5, and the owner signing his bit, i went away with the small green slip to tax the car.

Like a complete idiot, and having now, no idea why i did it i posted it off for a new reg certificate.

So i cant now tax my car until i get the new V5 through. DVLA rekon between 4-6 weeks!!!

I tried calling the last owner but the V5 was posted off on the same day (last friday) Is there nothing that i can do? I have outstanding tax from another vehicle but i guess i cant even swap that becuase they would need the V5 form/slip!!!

Any suggestions? I pretty much know im donald ducked.

Bugga.

Risk it mate
Police cant do anything about you having no tax only notify the DVLA
so if you do get caught you have at least 60 days before the dvla will get to you by then you will have your new V5 and taxed your car jobs a goodun :D

You CAN tax your car without a V5 - I've done it on a new car that didn;t have a V5 at all... so at the same time, the Post OFfice sent off for one for me...

Go in, take the insurance and MOT cert. with you and try it. Worth a bash... at least you'll be legal then.

P.S. - why DID you post your bit you wally?

Funny that, but with the new 'tax you car online' rules, it takes up to 5 days for it to be delivered... so that could be true!

Dont understand - your not supposed to post the little green slip off anyway!? If you had that green slip, some smaller post offices may give you a tax disc by seeing it even though the new tax laws say you MUST have the full V5.

2 weeks DVLA usually take. They always say 6 weeks just to fob you off so you dont ring every day.

I was caught out without current tax by 3 volvos, 2 motorbikes and a van with a sodding great antenna and digital cameras. They had some live linkup back to the DVLA database and just ran the plates vs the db and I came up trumps....

I didn't have the V5 (lost in a move) but I had applied for a new one at the time. Told the copper as much, he believed me after craftily saying "ooh, yeah I had that - cost me Ԛ£17 the robbers!" when the correct cost is Ԛ£19 (or something I forget the details now!). I was only a couple of weeks over so the copper didn't even ask me for my other paperwork, told me to go to the DVLA and get taxed before anything nasty happened. The DVLA decided to "settle out of court" for Ԛ£30. I assume that Ԛ£30 went straight into the christmas party fund...

Anyway, long story short...

Get yourself to the local DVLA office with your MOT, Insurance and any other paperwork you can get your hands on. Passport might be a good idea. They have a procedure for taxing cars that don't have a V5 present, its routine for them. The pain in the arse is that they only open strict local government hours, ie 9-5 with an hour off for lunch so you need to either nip out from work or get an hour off.

DVLA local offices

From what I can remember/read on the site.. they will tax the car if you fill out a V62 and use that instead of the V5 over the counter.

Just the cheer you up the fine is up to Ԛ£1000 according to This

I have taxed a car in a post office with NO V5 or anything, only insurance and MOT. There is a form you have to fill out there.

Why would they have a problem with this? Your giving them money...and you proved that its insured and road worthy.

Oh driving without tax may invalidate your insurance which means you could be done for that as well.

Well guys,

I didnt expect to create such a conversation! Thanks for all your responses. I think im going to do another Del Boy, and "He Who Dares..Wins". I'll try the Post Office and see what they say. Failing that i'll carry with me the old car tax.

If the system worked on logic, to which it clearly doesnt. If your paid up for tax for a few months you ought to be able to use it on another car you own!

Its called the Geoff Clement school of thinking!!

I still have no idea why i sent that slip off. IM LOOSING IT.
