Hi Guys,

I have purchased a 316 i coupe a few months back so that i can begin a project.

The person i brought the vehicle of told me that it has an engine conversion ( 325). I have the MOT certificates and all the receipts for the additional work carried out.

However is there anything that I should check? car starts and drives well.

Thanks

That's one hell of a vague start to a project thread :P

Get some pics up, what is it you want to do? Or do you just want to know what engine it has?

Its go home or go hard! I have been driving the car for a few months no issues but obv need to make sure the engine is in good condition.

How would I know what engine it has? if its in good condition?

as you can tell my only source of learning about these cars has been youtube with countless DIY videos watched.

Have a look on that link, or get a pic up of the engine bay and someone will identify it straight away.

That's an early post facelift M20B25 engine. Car appears to have ABS, which, on a 316i saloon (it's not a coupe!), means that it should have rear disc brakes instead of the standard drums.
You can see the coolant level sensor on the coolant bottle with nothing connected to it. This confirms that it has a four pot body wiring loom, so probably a four pot bodyshell as well. Four pot shell doesn't have the mounts for that bottle, the correct mount for the AFM, or the bracket for the bank of three relay sockets under the cover, between the AFM and suspension turret top, so check that this has all been done properly. Looks like it may not have been, since the AFM appears to be in the wrong position.
If you have no confirmation that it's been recently done, I'd change the cambelt and water pump before running that engine much longer. Make yourself familiar with the procedures to fill the engine with coolant. This engine has cylinder head which will readily crack if the cooling system is airlocked.
As for the general life expectancy of this engine. I ran one to 300,000 miles which was still in perfect order, when the car it was in was encountered a flying porker.

But it is missing the pump or any signs of the piping, my guess is they have put the 325i engine loom in (which had ABS) connected it all up at one end............

Probably worth finding out what they did to the other end

You could be right, but I'm not sure you'd see any of the lines or pump from the two pics. Come to think of it, you probably should be able to see the plugs and sockets from the front sensors though.
In that case, it would be worth finding out where the live end of the wire is!
